What is the difference between alguronic acid and hydraluronic acid?

...and which one is better?

I've read several places where hydraluronic acid is one of the best things for your skin, next to retinol, but I've never heard of alguronic acid.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Re: What is the difference between alguronic acid and hydraluronic acid?

Found this on WIkipedia so not sure how much is true: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alguronic_acid

"Alguronic acid is not naturally present in human skin, should not be affected by skin enzymes, and is unlikely to be used by the skin. Conversely, hyaluronic acid is distributed throughout the body, is naturally produced in the skin, and, based on its ability to retain moisture, plays a major role in tissue structure and repair. In testing done by commercial laboratories, alguronic acid was found to inhibit production of hyaluronic acid-degrading enzymes by up to 67%.[5] The relevance of this inhibition in vitro to skin physiology is unknown."

My interpetation is that alguronic works to keep the hyaluronic acid produced in your skin from degrading by stopping the production of certain enzymes so it can be beneficial.

Re: What is the difference between alguronic acid and hydraluronic acid?

Alguorinic acid is a patented, proprietary ingredient of Algenist. The studies about its efficacy are almost entirely published by, you guessed it, Algenist. Algenist claims many things about alguorinic acid: it mositurizes, it plumps the skin and reduces wrinkles, it makes skin more even, boosts radiance, does your taxes, walks the dog, and cleans up after your husband. :-)

Hyaluronic acid, however, is a proven ingredient. HA can hold 1000x its weight in water. It is naturally present in the skin. It is brilliant at plumping up the skin and, assuming it isn't mixed with irritants, non-irritating. The best formulations are HA + something moist. This allows the HA to draw in water to do its job.
