This is not an expression I use, but I come across it from time to time on these boards and other places online. And then I wonder just what it means. Wrong haircut? Bad color? Just curious. I hope my short straight bob isn't old lady hair lol!

@shoesnbags Just a shot at an older woman who has "let herself go."

To me 'old lady hair' is someone who has their hair in and upsweep with curls and still has a perm. Women who have their hair same style since the 70's or earlier. Or a woman who has curls all over her head and only washes it once a week when she goes to the salon.

Probably an outdated style from the past.

Not sure what it is but it sounds kinda mean- I picture an very old lady with frizzy white hair...
We can't help what kind of natural hair we have (talking about myself, frizzy, wavy, cowlicky hair). And as we age, it doesn't get better! White hair is often dry, dull flyaway, frizzy. None of these are good looking, and not really possible to change it...!

Someone making fun of older women. I have seen some doozies on the younger generation, so I wouldn't be so quick to judge the elders.

I envision not someone who "let herself go", but rather a woman who spends a few hours weekly in a salon getting a blue tint on her white hair and curls tightly wound on small curlers that require an hour under a dryer. Then the hair is precisely styled and glued in place with a ton of hair spray. If it's rainy, she leaves the salon wearing her plastic pleated rain bonnet.

I picture all four hairstyles on the golden girls as "old lady hair". My mom had short hair and just had it done weekly at the salon but to me it wasn't old lady, she kept it a nice reddish brown color without a lot of curls in it.

I'm thinking of someone who has short curly grey hair but with a purple tint to it.

Your description fit my ma to a T. OMG...if she missed her weekly appt...
On the other hand...the ONLY way I can tame my WILD hair...is by putting it in a twist...which I have done for 50 years, so I am
