What do you think abt moisturizing bar soaps?

I’ve been getting into buying some bar soaps for shower that really moisturize. I still have a third of my beekmans and abt 2 months ago purchased a bar of oatmeal soap hand made by this woman. Natural ingredients and loaded with oatmeal. I was thinking how much of the moisturizing actually sinks into our skin when we rinse and towel off? I don’t know why I thought of this but for an average of $12 a bar I hate to think it just goes down the drain. Lol. What do you think?

I’ve used Beekman soaps for years now and my skin doesn’t feel dry(and I live in the desert). Even though I use body cream 2-3 times a week, I don’t feel like I need to.

I still use Dove. I don't think these soaps are worth the premium.

I'm very careful not to use regular soap on my face -- as most soaps dry the skin. My mother taught this when I was young. I've been using various bar soaps from L'Occitane and I like those specialty soaps. I also have a supply of body butters and other lotions for my body.

I use both Dove & Oil Of Olay.  Whichever one is on sale & I have coupons for.  I bulk purchase from BJ's.

I would think that your face wouldn't feel taught after the shower.  I've never had that issue after Philosophy.

Those 12 dollar bar soaps are artisan made, they use really good ingredients so that's what you are paying for. I think what they do is not strip the oils from the skin in the first place. I love high end artisan made soap and have paid 15 dollars a bar and to me it was worth every cent. I would not use the soap and not moisturize afterward though, especially in the cold weather.

Re: What do you think abt moisturizing bar soaps?

most of the dove soaps have a higher alkaline, then what is recommended, to be good for skin. that is because alkaline changes the ph and can damage the skin. in the past, i have seen dove listed as one of the worst bar soaps to use. i don't know if they have upped their game or not, in terms of removing harmful or potentially harmful chemicals.

i guess that if one has been using dove bar soap for years on end, they may not know that their skin is damaged or dehydrated. it's not just dove. many of the products in isle 5 are loaded with the same bad ingredients.

the skin is one of the ways that toxins get into your body. some of the chemicals can have a not good so good impact. for example, parabens and bha are preservatives and can disrupt your endocrine/ hormone system.

phtalates (sp?), in addition to disrupting your endocrine system, can increase or cause allergy problems. this ingredient is often in products that have a fragrance that doesn't come from an essential oil. this includes products like laundry detergents, shampoo and lotion.

if you search for something like "toxic ingredients in bar soap", you will probably be surprised at what you find out. some bar soaps have a formaldehyde or a derivative of it. no thanks to formaldehyde. i can wait until after i'm dead to have that in me. plus, it increases the risk of brain cancer, when exposed to it on a regular basis (think embalmer in a funeral home). again, no thanks.

at the very least, it is best to use a bar soap or any soap for that matter that does not have a high alkaline number. if I remember correctly 5-6 is average, and anything over that is high, thus potentially messing up your ph level.

in my humble opinion, it is better to use a bar soap like beekman that has no or as few chemicals as possible. some of the moisture comes from NOT having your skin ingest bad ingredients. just like they say "you are what you eat", "you are also what you wash, moisturize and do laundry with". by that i mean the chemicals that you put on your body/skin, get absorbed into your body and can wreak havoc or worst. and if one is on some types of medication, some of these chemicals can interfere with the medication, working as intended.

whether or not one thinks it is worth spending more on a bar of soap or any beauty product or any product that touches their skin for that matter, depends on whether or not they think not ingesting bad ingredients is worth it and whether or not they value trying to be as healthy as possible. in other words, if the label on your dove bar said "ingredient x is known to cause an allergic reaction or can cause cancer", would you still use the bar of soap?

does that mean that everyone that uses a product with ingredient x will get cancer or have an allergic reaction? NO, but some people will, and since there is no way for one to know in advance, whether or not they will, it probably isn't worth the risk. and for people that use fifty-eleven products (aka a lot of products or way too many products) that also have bad ingredients (in addition to bar soap, like moisturizer and make-up), the chances of something bad happening only increases because the skin is absorbing a lot more of the bad ingredients.

what is scary to me is that this country allows chemicals to be used, that other countries banned a long time ago. i don't understand the benefit of using ingredients that aren't good for human consumption. while there is no denying that i am chicken when it comes to some things, i would rather pay $15 for a bar of soap, then possibly have to go through rounds of radiation or chemo.

i have never used bar soap from a store. my grandmother use to make soap with goats milk and oatmeal, so i used that until she passed. then i was forced to find a replacement. couldn't find a bar soap that wasn't drenched in chemicals, so i switched to a shower gel that didn't have bad ingredients. when beekman 1802 arrived, i started using that in addition to shower gels that do not have the toxic chemicals. initially, i used the pure, but when i tried the honey & oats. i switched to that because i found it more moisturizing then the pure. while many people say that they have hard water, i have what i call diamond water, which is way harder (smile).

Re: What do you think abt moisturizing bar soaps?

@newme1  I've eliminated anything w/ sulfates for my face/body just as I did for my hair. It strips the moisture out. If you're not into reading labels, just know that if the product produces lots of suds/bubbles...sulfates.

I use a cleansing oil for my face at night to remove makeup and gentle Cetaphil in the morning. All of the Philosophy products are harsh on the skin...including Purity and the shower gels.

Moisturize face and body while skin is still damp and oils can be added if skin still feels dry.

Expensive soaps don't necessarily mean better soaps. You have to be an informed consumer and spend time reading labels.
