I use Ion color, which is available in liquid or cream. I mix it with Ion 20 (sensitive scalp) developer and let it set for a minute or two before I apply the color to my "regrowth"...roots. 😃

@Shanus - I LOVE your post!
I have been coloring my hair since my late twenties, when I saw my first grey hair. It's been 20 years now, and I am sick of it. Sick of the chemicals on my head, wondering how the color will "take" each time and even just being in the salon.
I have been toying with the idea of letting my hair go grey for about a year. It's long, colored and highlighted over that. I cancelled an appointment I had for last week,and was overdue as it was. My grey is in full bloom all around my face. Guess what? I don't hate it. I used to go nuts when I saw that halo around my face. Maybe it's that my focus is on other things these days, but right now I am seriously thinking of joining the sisterhood.
I don't want to go short, so I'll see how I can manage during the transition. I'll experiment with different hairstyles. I certainly have the time.right?
Your post was so encouraging!

Seriously, what is wrong with you people? People are dying and you are worried about your grey hair??? Wow.

Thank-you, Shanus! A very sweet welcome! I'm excited about the change. The roots have been a pain for years, so freedom from that sounds great!!

I started using temporary color by Christophe Robin until the salon opens. It washes out in 5-7 washes. This is a pricey alternative but the salon owner sent out several emails telling us not to do anything that would ruin what we have.

@catwhisperer Even before this virus outbreak people were dying every day all around the world..... from cancer, from heart attacks, from leukemia....from a long long list of things. I still wanted to keep on top of my grey roots. Shame on me.

@Tessa Mendoza You're so welcome, but I did it the "chicken way"...8 hrs. in the salon one day! My hair was a short pixie then, I consulted a color specialist who said my hair was in great condition due to deep conditioners in spite of dark dye applied every 3 weeks. She asked me to skip 2 or 3 color and cut appts. so she had about an 3/4"-1"of roots to see the true shade to work with. That was not too bad since I could air dry and hair would be curly if that long, covering most of the silver coming through. At my next appt. w/ specialist, she highlighted (bleached) almost every hair on my head...very few hairs not in foil. It bleached out after 2 applications and 5 hours to the palest yellow I've seen. From there, the purple toner was applied and color toner to match my silver white roots. At hour 7, she re-cut my hair into a pixie, taking off any possibly damaged ends and there it was! My hair was all sparkly silver white. After 4 months of cuts, the bleached portion of hair was gone and all the white hair was my own. I've since grown it out to a short bob w/o layers. I can blow it out straight w/ brush or still let it air dry curly. I went grey before 30 (all over grey) & had been coloring my hair since 20 when it was 50% grey...dark brown and then lightening to medium brown as I got older, but either way it was 47 years of hair color every 3 wks. and enough was enough. BTW, by the 3rd week, the part was already grey and hair line, too so could really go every 2 wks. It was a resistant grey, thick and curly so as it became 100%, could no longer do it myself. Every 3 wks. $125 for cut and color or it'd be color on 3rd week and back the next week for a cut. I was tied to the salon checking my calendar to see what was coming up...events, vacations...to tell if I'd be at end of 2nd week cycle and be going away for 10 ways. Uh oh, have my hair colored/cut a week sooner. Another $125.
Try to stay with it @Tessa Mendoza. It's the most freeing thing I've ever done for myself. Even if I'd have to do it the "grow it out over many months way", no regrets! Check in for a boost or support if you decide to go with it. Seeing my friends go grey with me (we did it as a group),some had long hair, I can share their tips for style tricks. 🌸

@shaggygirl & others: No shame at all. It's definitely personal choice...always. Some women in the 90's are still coloring their hair. I'm only supporting those on the fence or who have decided to stop coloring. I colored it myself for 42 years...just as all of you.
