What Am I Doing Wrong With This Epilator???

I have the most recent Emjoi 62 disc epilator that was the TSV in Dec. I used it right away and held on thru the intense pain. Thought I missed a lot of hairs but thought it was my error because of the pain. Since December, I have used it probably 6 times. The last being this morning, just 1 WEEK since last doing it. I had so much hair on my legs you would have thought I never shaved in weeks!! Even now, my legs feel stubbly and in the sunlight, I can see small hairs!! WHAT?? What happened to the "no shaving for 3-4 weeks" they claimed when I bought it? There is no way I missed that much hair last week when I did it. I saw other threads where people said about hair growth cycles but that makes no sense. When you shave, you cut all the hairs off at the same time ,at the same length. So when you rip the hairs out, isn't it the same? I almost think this epilator is ripping the hairs in half (while removing some from the root) and that is why in just a couple of days you feel a lot of stubble. This is frustrating to me and I will return it if this is not how typical epilators work. Anyone know? On a positive note: The pain is much less this time around. Just a tingling pulling sensation.

Re: What Am I Doing Wrong With This Epilator???

The suggestion that you don't need to use it for several weeks is mostly wishful thinking. Maybe those who have very little hair to begin with might not need to use it that often.

No, shaving & epilating are not accomplishing the same thing. Shaving cuts the hair at skin level. Hair keeps growing and there is usually a stubble very soon.

Epilating tweezes - pulls the hair out by the root. It has to start growing again & takes longer to be seen & felt. But, not all hairs are epilated at the same time. The hairs have different growing cycles so there are always some growing in.

You should shave your legs a few days before you epilate so you can get the hairs all even and pull at the same length. I've found that over time, the hairs don't grow back. I epilate on the slower speed so that I'm not cutting the hairs instead of pulling them.

Re: What Am I Doing Wrong With This Epilator???

I have used an epilator for maybe 10 years. Maybe 5. Time has a way of getting away from me. I had an old Emjoi model and bought the new one. I do epilate only every 2 to 3 weeks. It's not that I am hairless for 2 or 3 weeks but the hair is so fine and few that it doesn't become noticeable until about the 2 week mark. It took a long time, maybe a year, before I got to that stage. I feel almost no pain but even after all these years, it is not painless. Pain is the wrong word. Pricking might be a better description.

Hair does grow in different cycles. There is hair under the surface when you are epilating and those will come up in a few days while those you pulled won't come up for a week or so.

I agree, it does pull the hair in half often, rather than pulling it out from the root. If I'm in too much of a hurry or move the epilator too fast, that still happens to me. Over the years, I have learned to go slower, try to hold me skin taught, and epilate after a shower but when my skin is completely dry and I have not applied any lotion.

I don't remember, it's been so long but I know it took a few months for sure of practice. When I think about it, not sure why I didn't give up.

With this new one, I am now able to do my underarms. I was never able to do that with my old one. It hurt like a heck with the new one but not as bad as the old one. I love how I never have that darkness under my arms. I do my underarms every 4 or 5 days. Still stings but it's only been a couple of months.

Re: What Am I Doing Wrong With This Epilator???

Thanks for the advice ladies. I think I will try the shaving tip and the slower speed. But know that I heard it put that way it does make sense about the hair growth. And it is probably wishful thinking about not having hair for 4 weeks! I will keep using it and give it time because for right now it's lasting a couple days at least where for shaving, it's every night. Thanks!

Re: What Am I Doing Wrong With This Epilator???

I have never shaved prior to epilating. I do use a slower speed if possible. The one thing, when I first started epilating, the instructions specifically said to hold the skin taut. I don't think they say that now, but I was always careful to do that. Pull on the skin to make sure it is taut. It's rather difficult to do on the underarms though.

At 55 the most hair I have left is my underarms. I rarely ever do my legs anymore as there is very little hair left. I don't know if it is from epilating, age, hypothyroidism, or a combination.

I always just figured I had slippery hair, very fine an blonde on legs. So nice to know I'm not the only one for which this thing won't work.
