Wave Irons/Irons with More than One Barrel...

Does anyone with short hair use one? My hair is chin-length and I'd like some waves every now and again, but I'm scared of looking like I stepped back in time to the 80's and revived the crimper! It seems like many would be too large for my hair length and the smaller ones would crimp. Any advice, or should I give it up? :-)
