We've had 2 different salt filter systems installed in our house (that's 2 in 28 years!). Both made a huge difference in our extremely hard water. I will say (and it may depend on the level of hardness) the salt does leave deposits. But they rinse off easily, and are much more preferable to the other rock-hard mineral deposits that the un-softened water left behind!

We have a Culligan system with the salt filter and a separate iron filter. The whole setup was around $2000.00 8 years ago.
