When I stopped coloring my hair, it was a gradual change, so no comments, but agree with some other posters, it was the most freeing feeling (still is) no regrets..I hate seeing women my age with obviously dyed dark hair, now that looks unnatural!

You will be very happy with your decision! I like your husband's suggestion...

IMO, it's a good answer because it keeps the tone light-hearted. No "need" as far as others are concerned to go into serious explanations or excuses.

Re: WHAT TO SAY RE: NEW GREY HAIR?

@Shanus  Are you having white hightlights put in or gray?  There is a difference, but either way, that is a lot of processing being done to your hair to lift it from brown to white/gray.  I will be anxious to hear how this turns out.  My hair is white (not gray) on the top and sides, but the back is more brown and white.  I would love to have the back colored white, but my sister ( who did hair for years) said that it would really dry my hair out.  Because I was a brunette, it would have to be left on quite a while to lift it through all the shades.  I have opted not to attempt this.  My hair is below my shoulders.  You said you have short hair, so dealing with hair damage may not be as big of an issue.  I transitioned with highlights, too.  Now that I no longer color, it is so liberating.  As someone else mentioned, I catch myself in the mirror and am always a little surprised, but it is a good surprise.  I get many compliments from old and young.  I think you will be happy you are doing this.  If anything, it is a change.  At this age, it is fun to change it up a little.  BTW, my DH loves my white hair.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.  Maybe you could post B & A pics - cover your face if you want.

The way she explained it to me is that (as a color specialist) she could remove the dye w/o bleaching it out...maybe there's another chemical that removes color. Then the highlights would match my roots/regrowth which is white. The few strands of dark at the roots that come in will be highlighted (just that 1/2"-1") as I come in every 4-6 wks. for my haircut.

Yes it is easier w/ short hair. Mine is short, layered and natural curly but goes straight w/o any gel or mousse....think Jennifer Lawrence's short haircut. Pics will be posted and definitely face blocked out...haven't figured out how yet...just hold a round piece of cardboard over my face, I guess.

Re: WHAT TO SAY RE: NEW GREY HAIR?

You've made this decision, so you obviously want this change. You can't predict the future. You have no idea whether anyone will say something. Just don't worry about it. You'll deal with it easily if it should occur.

Maybe less teeth-gnashing?

Re: WHAT TO SAY RE: NEW GREY HAIR?

@Shanus,  When I let my hair grow in grey I had it cut it really short layers and it did not take long at all.  My hair grows quickly.  I love my hair and I hope you love yours.  I sure do not miss coloring it that is for sure.  Every so often I use a shampoo that takes out any yellow in the hair.  Keep us updated and let us know how you like your NEW hair.  HeartCat Very Happy

Nope, not yet...a week from today at 10AM, my stylist removes all dark dye, does heavy white highlights to match my (by then 8 wk. white roots!) and I leave w/ my hair grey/white.

So, what should I say to anyone who sees me w/ dark hair on Monday and my white hair on Wednesday? Shocked, I'm sure. DH said to tell them I had such a frightening, realistic and upsetting nightmare, I woke up and my hair had turned white. Men!

Would love to hear your suggestions.

first you are worrying too much

if anyone makes comments

just say I wanted a change and leave it at that.  no need to say more

That is exactly what i did.  After about three cuts i asked my hairdresser "Is that all me?". She said yes.  That was a couple of months ago.
