Re: Using conditioner instead of shampoo

I've been using shampoo for 51 years and my hair is just fine. Now, suddenly shampoo is pure evil in a bottle. I'm not sure why this all started except that someone (who shall go nameless!) was trying to make a buck. This is no different than all the other products we're told will be our beauty salvation. We have to use our brains and not buy into every new concept that comes down the road.

Shampoo is for cleaning of the hair and conditioning is for dry hair to make it more manageable and softer. I would use both. Conditioner is not a cleanser O/P.

haha, you're so right! Remember when Lisa & Lesley were ADAMANT that liquid foundation is evil, evil, EVIL--until Bare Minerals came out with a liquid foundation (they didn't admit that it IS liquid--they tried to get us to believe it's something else), and all of a sudden liquid foundation ISN'T evil?

Remember how uncomfortable they both looked during that presentation?

ITA! His stuff is overpriced hype and nothing else.{#emotions_dlg.sneaky}

I wish people would not dismiss a product as "hype" just because they don't like it! It's NOT "hype" if it works...which it does for me. Most of us who try ANY type of co-wash probably would not have done so if we were happy with our hair after using shampoo.

I won't argue "overpriced", it is expensive! Smile However, I've given up some other "expensive" products that weren't making any difference in my hair/skin/nails, etc. in order to afford my WEN.

Re: Using conditioner instead of shampoo

No, shampoo isn't necessary. There are some people who do conditioner only washing (CO-washing), as you are, and some people who only use water. I gave up shampoo years ago and went first with conditioner only washing and then moved to WEN, which is just fancy conditioner only washing. I don't think I'll ever move to "water only" washing because my hair is dry and wavy, so it tangles easily and needs a lot of moisture.

Re: Using conditioner instead of shampoo

I use a small amount of shampoo on my scalp. A bottle last me a year or longer. While I am not opposed to condition cleaning for hair, I am opposed to not shampooing my scalp. My fine hair would be very limp to use a conditioner on the top of my head.

Good tips from the American Academy of Dermatology

https://www.aad.org/dermatology-a-to-z/health-and-beauty/hair-care/tips-for-healthy-hair

How you wash your hair and the products you use can go a long way toward maintaining smooth, shiny hair. Follow these simple tips from dermatologists to maintain healthy hair.

  1. Wash oily hair more frequently. How often you wash your hair should be based on how much oil your scalp produces.
  • If your scalp is oily, you may need to wash it as often as once a day.
  • If you have chemically treated hair, your hair may be drier, so you may want to wash it less frequently.
  • As you get older, your scalp makes less oil, so you may not need to shampoo as often. But if you see flakes in your hair, you may not be shampooing enough. This can lead to dandruff and other scalp diseases.
  1. Concentrate shampoo on the scalp. When washing your hair, concentrate on cleaning primarily the scalp, rather than washing the entire length of hair. Washing only your hair can create flyaway hair that is dull and coarse.
  2. Use conditioner after every shampoo unless you use a “2-in-1” shampoo, which cleans and conditions hair. Using a conditioner can significantly improve the look of damaged or weathered hair by increasing shine, decreasing static electricity, improving strength and offering some protection from harmful UV rays.
  3. Concentrate conditioner on the tips of the hair. Because conditioners can make fine hair look limp, they only should be used on the tips of the hair and not on the scalp or length of the hair.
  4. Choose a shampoo and conditioner formulated specifically for your hair type. For example, if you color your hair, use a shampoo designed for color-treated hair. If your hair is damaged or chemically treated, consider a “2-in-1” shampoo. Regardless of cost, many shampoo and conditioner brands provide the same benefits.
  5. Protect hair when swimming. Protect your hair from the damaging effects of chlorine by wetting and conditioning your hair before swimming. Wear a tight-fitting swim cap and use a specially formulated swimmers shampoo and deep conditioner after swimming to replace lost moisture.

Re: Using conditioner instead of shampoo

I have tried the conditioner only washing and it leaves my hair flat and oily looking. I have good hair and only need to shampoo twice a week. My scalp is absolutely not clean unless I use shampoo.

Re: Using conditioner instead of shampoo

I tried Wen many years ago and it was a fail. My hair never felt or smelled ""clean"". I do not regularly use conditioner on my hair because it makes it limp. I shampoo my hair about every other day. I have dry short hair.
