@patbz

Reading your response about the surprise curl in your hair was like a light bulb moment for me.  I was wondering where the curl could have suddenly come from in my hair once I stopped coloring it.  My mom was even commenting about it.

Perhaps the chemicals in the color was somehow responsible for keeping our hair straighter?  Mystery for sure.

To add my story:

I had been coloring my hair since I got "foil highlights" in 1981.  It was the latest thing and I spent my own money for them.  I seem to remember them costing around $50...a lot considering I was only 14 years old then.

Fast forward through all those years of color to about three years ago.

At 54 years old, I began noticing the front of my hair was losing color fast after visiting the salon.  I questioned the stylist and she said it must be the water, shampoo, hormones, etc., etc.,.....

I went to a different salon and the same thing happened.  So I decided to just go ahead and let it grow out to see what was going on.

I was surprised to see I had white temples coming in.  The rest of my hair was an ash brown color.  So what was happening was the white wouldn't hold the color like the rest of my hair did.  None of the stylists seemed to know that was going on!

Now my hair is beginning to get white highlights throughout.  I expect to be mostly white by my 70's like my mom.  She has beautiful hair.

@timeless  My hair got curlier, in a good way, when the color was gone. My stylist said it was heathier hair, had more shine and is thicker now....less damage and less frizz.

Re: Transitioning to Gray hair? Share your story, please.

@Witchy Woman .................when I let mine grow out several years ago my stylist did what she called a reverse color.  She did streaks of blond in my dark brown hair and although the gray was noticable it did not scream "growing out".  I also kept my hair longer at the time and did a simple up do with a clip which was also less noticable.

I am not at all sorry I let it grow out.  I have white hair now and get tons of compliments.

Like many others who have responded to this post, I colored my hair with blond highlights for years until 5 yrs ago and I just said "enough". My hair at that time was looking like that over processed hair that you see with years of highlights. I was 69 then and do not regret for a minute my decision to let my natural color grow out. My hair is now a beautiful salt and pepper color and I get many compliments about my natural hair. It is a decision only you can make but I bet you won't regret it if you grow out your natural color. And I agree with several others: to heck with trying to look 30 again. I embrace my grey hair, my wrinkles and my age. Treat yourself to a great color lipstick to go along with your new natural color. Good luck!

@retiredgal69   Looking 30 was 40 yrs. ago. Lol. Sometimes depending on hair color choices, makeup, etc. women can look older coloring their hair. Chances are women over 65 and 70 are covering a lot of grey and beginning to lose voume in face/neck, wrinkling, etc.

No one is fooled by hair dye. Of course, as I've said many times, all hair color is personal choice. I felt it was more natural for me to have my silver hair at my age and with such fair skin. Blonde wold not flattering on me.

@retiredgal69

I laughed when I read your suggestion about lipstick.

Just ordered 3 MAC lipsticks...Yum Yum Pink, Morange, and Ruby Woo Red...all very vibrant.  The pink and orange are repeat purchases and the red is the color Taylor Swift wears Cat LOL

Not that I'm a big fan, but I always admired her bright red lips...and this is the color so I read.

I've loved lipstick from an early age and have always liked brighter colors with my light olive skin.

Grew up seeing my Sicilian mama in bright orange lipstick, so it was natural for me to gravitate towards color.

Your picture is lovely by the way Cat Happy

@Shanus   Please do not kid yourself on covid. It is still here among us. My huband and I just finished 5 days of Paxlovid yesterday.  So stinking careful all these years, went grocery shopping last Friday, he came down with it Saturday, me on Sunday. That Pax stuff is horrid, side effects su*k the life (almost) out of you or at least it did me.  He bounced back the very next day even prior to Pax. I won't do that stuff again! I'll be doing tylenol extra strength and hope for the best.

I didn't want the chemicals so I switched to henna. I didn't like my color using henna. I looked older. I went grey naturally starting last year in March and now all of my neck length hair is grey. It's freeing. The advice I would give is to keep cutting and styling your hair. I also have three wigs 2 brown and one blonde and use and still use those on days that my hair doesn't look good.

@PINKdogWOOD   I'm happy you and your hubby have recovered, but I'm confused why you think I'm in harm's way.
