Tips for using velcro rollers

I'd love to hear how you use velcro rollers to get all-day body and a little curl.I've read a few tips here and there on other threads and want to know the secret! I have fine, straight hair that goes limp in humid weather, which is pretty much every day here in the South! My length is a little below my collar-bone with long layers.

Do you use the velcro rollers once your hair is completely dry, or just a little damp? When you take it out, do you curl that section with a curling iron to lock it in, or brush and go?

Thanks!

Re: Tips for using velcro rollers

I use a combination of regular Velcro rollers and Velcro-covered hot rollers to do my hair every day. It has layers and is just above shoulder length.

I wash my hair at night and let it air-dry overnight. In the morning I mist my hair with water until it's barely damp, then comb some Matrix volumizing mousse through it. As I roll each strand, I spray it with a thermal setting spray (about three sprays per strand). I use one by Matrix, but Redken also has one. After my whole head is rolled (18 rollers total), I use the blow dryer on the high setting for about 5 minutes and then let my hair set while I do my makeup and have breakfast. I use hair spray after styling and have good hold all day.

Re: Tips for using velcro rollers

I use velcro rollers every day. My hairs sounds alot like yours as well...fine, shoulder length and straight and I am also from the humid South! {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

I stopped using flat irons/curling irons last June because my hair was just horrible (dry and split ends etc). I also tried WEN (and love it).

I still wash my hair everyday and blowdry on the coolest setting. (I just dont feel right if I dont wash my hair)

I use Big Sexy Hair "Root Pump Plus" (spray alil on my roots before I blowdry)

After my hair is dry I tease each section alil before I put it up in the velcro roller and spray a lil Big Sexy Hair "Spray and Play Harder" hairspray. (I have a "waalaa" teasing comb for teasing)

I like using the larger velcro rollers and pop em up after I blowdry, I blast them with alil heat from blowdryer and let set while I do my other morning stuff....like coffee! {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

I get volume with alil curve from the big rollers.

Maybe 2-3 times a month I use the Calista hot rollers (long) if I want curls that day. takes about 5 minutes....by the time I put them up I start taking them down. I get curls and volume with Calista.

Re: Tips for using velcro rollers

I have figured out an unconventional method (at least I don't know anyone else who does it) to get curl and body in my fine, more than shoulder length hair. This will only work if you have enough length to gather it into a pony tail at the top of your head.

I shower and wash my hair at night, use a heat protector spray with a blow dryer until my hair feels very nearly dry. Then I comb it forward from the crown (this hair will be divided into three parts for 3 rollers) and start rolling the back most section in a medium size velcro roller(when most of the hair is rolled, I spray the last 2 inches next to my scalp with Herbal Essence spray gel) finish rolling and secure with one large pin right at my scalp. Divide the remaining hair into 2 more sections and do the same thing, pinning the rollers to each other. Then I brush the sides and back into a high pony tail using a cloth bungee type band (which is right behind the first roller) divide that hair into 3 sections and roll each of those sections (one on each side and one in the back) onto 3 slightly smaller rollers than I used for the top section. I usually hit the rollers with a quick blow dry to get the drying process going and then I go to bed. This is a long explanation for something that takes me all of 5 minutes tops to complete. Much easier to see than to explain.

The rollers are all on the top of my head and don't bother me at all when I'm sleeping. Remove the rollers and bungee in the morning and I have body on the top from the gel and curls at the bottom. I used to use a curling iron every morning, and although I could get curl, the top would not hold any volume. I did try leaving my hair more wet but found it was not dry by morning. There must be just enough dampness left to make the curls set. I love that my hair is already done in the morning without and more work than removing the rollers and combing it. Took me many trys to get this just right. Maybe this will work for someone else.

Funny I use WEN and big red sexy/Velcro rollers!....I cleanse daily, blow dry, put in Velcro rollers & spray with VTS (wen)...then do my getting ready routine, then I hit with blow dry once more quickly, take down and use some big sexy spray and play (due to humid climate we are in right now)...I would love to just let it air dry, but seems to look better if I blow and do the rollers....picked up some good tips from everyone...Smiley Happy

I learned that trick back in 1971 when I was on a Seventeen magazine fashion board.{#emotions_dlg.laugh} My hair is short now but I really think that method was still the best for a beautiful hairstyle....

Re: Tips for using velcro rollers

SoftRaindrops - Thanks for that info. Wish I had seen that article all those years ago, must have missed that issue.{#emotions_dlg.glare} I got the idea for this after watching ladies on youtube use a tube sock or a headband and rolling the hair in those overnight. Tried it and found that my hair was very tangled or had kinks in it depending on how carefully it rolled up. Figured I wasn't the first one to ever do this. My husband calls it the "Pebbles Flintstone method" and my kids think it's a riot.

Re: Tips for using velcro rollers

Great tips, ladies. It sounds like a curling iron really isn't needed, just blow it almost dry and roll. I'm always experimenting with the method of fixing my hair; I keep thinking the perfect, easy way is out there somewhere!

Re: Tips for using velcro rollers

I've have used Velcro rollers for years. I have below the shoulder hair. I put different products in my hair after washing and blow dry it normally. My hair is fairly thin and curls well. I use large Velcro rollers all over once my hair is dry and then finish my makeup and the rest of my morning routine. Right before I need to leave, I take them out and I have smooth and slightly curled hair. If I don't use them then my hair is frizzy.
