I m glad that at least I am not the only one who can't seem to get them to work!  I have tried so many kinds --- cheap, more expensive, smaller, larger -- same thing!

 

I don't know what the answer is for me.  I thought for sure I could master this "simple" up-do!!!  

 

I tried also doing a low messy bun and I can't get that right either!  A girl I know wears one all the time and her hair is about the same length as mine.  I asked her one time if it was difficult and she said absolutely not!  On the spot she whipped out the elastic hair holder and a couple of bobbie pins and proceeded to demonstrate.  It took her about 10 seconds.  I went home and tried it and tried it and tried it.  Couldn't get it to stay and the pins all kept flying out!
