Re: Thinning Hair --- what works?

My story incorporates a few different attempts to stop my hair loss.

I started losing my hair in my early 50's. Noticed it was thinning a few years after menopause. Then it continued until I decided to try various suggested methods.

Started all the vitamins and protein drinks. Nothing.

Used Wen Tea Tree for years but my hair was getting thinner. Then I heard about the hairloss problems related to Wen and stopped using it. I do want to say that I do not blame Wen because I used it to stop my hair loss. But, I figured I didn't need to use something that might add to my problem.

I started using Rogaine about 18 months ago. I didn't like the idea of using it but I was facing a situation where I might have to wear wigs and I didn't want to do that. However, I was concerned about what it did and how it worked. I really didn't want to use it but desperate to save my hair.

After approx. 4 months I saw hair growing in all the thin areas. I was amazed at the amount of growth although it was still baby hair.

I saw Hairmax Laser Band on QVC and decided to buy it so I could stop using Rogaine. I'm not sure how many lights are in the band, but I bought it last December.

I knew if I stopped using Rogaine my new hair would fall out and I'd have to wait another four months for the Hairmax to work (if it did work). So I used both. I later found out on the Hairmax website that they state you got more hair growth using both Rogaine and Hairmax.

My hair was getting thick, like when I was in my 40's. I was, and still amazed how much hair regrew. I couldn't tell which product was working but knew I didn't want to continue using both. I stopped using the Rogaine and only used the Hairmax.

OMG! My hair started coming out in clumps! Hair was everywhere. It scared me as I never saw such sudden hair loss. That experience showed that Rogaine was what produced the hair growth. Before I stopped, I was using both Rogaine and Hairmax. Rogaine 8 months, Hairmax 6 months.

If Hairmax truly works, it doesn't compare to Rogaine. Because I've used both, I can't be certain how much hair growth I got from Hairmax. I know how much hair growth I got from Rogaine.

I use the Hairmax Laser Band 3x a week. I use Rogaine 7 days a week. My hair is thick, I do not have any thin spots. I do not like using Rogaine for many reasons, but I'm afraid to stop. I know my hair will fall out again even using the Hairmax.

No simple solution to hair loss. I would think long and hard before paying that amount for a cap. I paid $350 for the laser band and I know it did not produce the thick hair I now have.

Sorry to write so much. Such a long story.

@Shanus

Yes, I guess my natural re-growth at this point is not really blonde, but a salt and pepper, grey and very light brown, almost blonde.

@Ceci

I am truly glad for you that you have results.  But I just don't feel I can use Rogaine, etc. I have so many health issues and medications that I don't think this would be a good thing for me.  If not for this, I would try it.

Re: Thinning Hair --- what works?

Thanks, all, for your very kind and informative posts!  I see many good suggestions and many tips and kind advice.  I see this is not a topic which is rare, unfortunately.  I do plan on getting medical advice.  My sister went to many medical doctors and tried quite a few things but ended up just cutting her hair short and styling to make her look as full as possible.  Thanks again---much appreciated!

Rogaine, aka, Minoxidil, began in the 80's, as a med for high blood pressure, people were taking it and finding it was growing hair, and they began marketing it as a hair growth product. At first it was only available as a hair growth product as a RX.

Re: Thinning Hair --- what works?

Copper peptides mimic the effects of minoxidil by causing an increase in the size of hair follicles which then causes the follicles to produce hair, hair that is larger in diameter and stronger. In fact copper peptides are used in some brands of hair loss treatments and it's listed as one of the active ingredients there.

I noticed increased facial fuzz when I was using a CP serum on my face. I didn't know at the time that it would do that and then I found info saying CP can cause increased hair growth so I stopped using CP serum on my face. I was getting tired of removing the fuzz so often. Now things are much better since I stopped using the CP serum on my face...it's normal now

Re: Thinning Hair --- what works?

I don't know about others whose hair is thinning, but in addition to having incredibly fine hair now that it's white, I recently realized I've lost nearly all of my hair on my arms and legs. I mean ANY kind of hair, not just robust hair, but the down as well. I found one teeny one on a forearm, but none on my legs. I don't know when that happened, but I'm definitely asking for a thyroid test when I see a new doctor, and will ask for the result.

I think it's wise to make sure there's nothing medical going on with hair loss. Medical problems can run in families, so their consequences can seem like a familial trait when they may be the result of a treatable condition.
