Re: The problem is that it looks like a wig......

Beautiful post, Maria. Thank you. One of my dearest friends is dealing with BC just now, so she and I are going to have a "fashion show" for just the two of us when her wigs and my wigs come. I'm SO grateful that she doesn't read these boards. None of the unkind comments here today have bothered me; I'm just made of sterner stuff than she is. I'm sure she'd feel humiliated by the cracks and pictures of one of the Three Stooges and all the little goodies that have been trotted out. So easy to say such things carelessly-so hard for those who live them.

Mary Beth said she was taking a couple of these wigs to London when her son gets married. So she must like them and think they are ok!

I'm not bothered by the unkind comments but I am bothered by posters who think it's ok to make them, ok to hurt people just for the sake of making their opinion known. I'm a tough old broad, I can take it but I can also give it. Lord help the person who snickers at my wig and doesn't have the good sense to turn their face away first...as my mother would say "it'll be all over but the cryin'"...lol.

Re: The problem is that it looks like a wig......

Maybe the wigs aren't the greatest but for some it just might be what gets you thru the day. For those who have little or no hair and aren't comfortable with that wigs and or pieces help them feel more normal. And everyone doesn't have the money to afford a high end wig and this could be their little hope. It isn't so much what the meanies said abou these wigs it's about all the comments about fake hair in general. You might have taken away what little confidence they have in wearing in. Shame on you. I'm sure your Moms are all proud of you. I hope you never feel like you HAVE to wear something on your head just to maintain yor dignity. Kudos to the bald lady. We should all be blest with your self esteem .

If you are talking about the recent TSV, I agree that it looks like a wig on everyone and too shiny. The price was too high for that quality. This is one item that sticks out like a sore thumb!

This thread seems so mean. I am in my late 30's and I get up every morning, shower, and style my hair. However, if I were in my elder years and I could not hold my arms up for 15 min to blow and curl my hair, I would absolutely get a wig. And most seniors cannot afford something expensive... so this would suffice. Yes, it is commendable to go "natural" but some ladies in the past generations are too set in their ways, and a believe wig is better than a bed head. I don't think this is marketed to the 20-somethings.

And what about the SURVIVORS who can't afford to get extensions or an expensive hairpiece? Best wishes to you all...!

Actually I don't see much meanness here but it has to be said, women wearing wigs are a target of derision.

I've never understood it.

If you lose a limb and get a prosthetic; no-one laughs at you.

If you lose an eye and get a glass one; people don't nudge each other and shriek 'it's a fake' to embarrass the wearer and make her feel vain or freakish.

If you lose your hair and wear a wig; almost every woman will sneer and laugh behind your back.

Excellent observation.... I don't understand it either.

Re: The problem is that it looks like a wig......

Some great synthetic wigs can be found on various websites. You just need to know the difference in the type of wig you're buying. As someone else mentioned a lot has to do with the light weight type that are breathable and look like a real scalp- with what they call a monofiliment cap. Some of the synthetics look better than real hair and are much lower maintenance. I had a couple of Revlon wigs in flattering styles. Also Raquel Welch and a few other brands I tried after chemo.

Vogue wigs online has good prices & it's where I found my favorite wigs I used for business meetings and that type of thing. My chemo nurses would tell me nobody would ever know it was a wig. I went through 3 seasons of wigs and in winter they kept my head warm. Of course when I got home I couldn't wait to yank it off and slept in a stocking cap for warmth.

I had one lady stop me and ask where I got my hair cut while wearing a wig. She asked if she could take a picture of my hair to take to her stylist.

I stayed with the color I wore my hair prior to treatment- a sandy blonde. With a good synthetic many shades of blonde are blended together. I always bought the ones with slightly darker roots to look quite natural.

For those looking for a truly natural looking wig, I'd suggest you shop around. They aren't expensive and go on sale all the time. You don't have to settle for one that looks too shiny & unnatural when there are some better ones for around the same price point. They'll even send swatches on loan for free.

Re: The problem is that it looks like a wig......

Those wigs looked liked wigs... And poor Rachel looked so mousey in her page boy style. I felt bad for her. I laughed when the vendor tried on several. She looked ridiculous. The only one who looked okay was Pat. She looked nice in short hair. Glad I do not have to wear a wig.

Re: The problem is that it looks like a wig......

Thought I'd mention, my last chemo was in February of 2012. Today my hair is finally the way I used to wear it; shoulder length with long layers and no bangs.

There were times I never thought the day would come. Well it did. It grew back twice as thick and curly.. but I usually wear it straight.

Women lose hair for many reasons- making wigs more of a necessity. Although being bald was more liberating and I chose to go natural most of the time.

If it makes any woman for any reason feel better about herself, it's not our place to judge.
