Tea Tree oil

I decided to try this on my scalp as an overnight leave in.I am not sure what I did wrong, but I followed the directions and my hair looked like I dipped it in a grease vat,and it definitely would have stained the pillow.The smell was incredibly overpowering as well( I know TT oil is strong, but this burned my eyes strong).I am thinkin that on my short pixie hair it was too much product? would it work well if I applied a little to my palms and massaged it into my scalp?
