If you are having this done at a hospital (versus a surgery center) there should be an IV specialist. You can request that person. If not, I would ask the anesthesiologist to start the IV for you.

I am glad that you have a date and the end is in sight. Let them know on Thursday that you are very anxious and consider asking for some medication to hel you sleep the night before and to take the morning of.
They hear this all the time and will be happy to help you to deal with this. Anyone in your place would be worried and upset.
Best of luck and keep us posted!.

I'm going in for surgery July 6 at 2:00 . I have a pre op appt this Thursday. I can't wait to get this over.
I am very anxious about the I.V last time I had one was very painful. I am actually scared of the I.V and getting anxiety over this. Do they have any numbing spray before they insert it?
You've been on hold for a while, of course you're anxious. Talk about this in your pre-op appt. don't let them poo-poo you, if it hurt you, well then it HURT and needs to be addressed. If you're not going to be asleep for the procedure ask for conscious sedation for the I.V.. If you're going to be sedated for the surgery ask them to wait and start your I.V. after you're sedated.
Best wishes, and keep us posted.

Yes, they do have numbing medicine but it is a shot too. But I prefer it to the putting in the IV.
You do have to request this because not just anyone can use this numbing medicine.
Please never let anyone stick you more than twice (which is a lot for me). I have terrible veins and this scares me more than the procedure.
Ask your Dr for some medicine to take the morning of your procedure. I always have this to relax me.
Never be afraid to tell the nurse that is putting in the IV that you are a hard stick.
Sending prayers for your surgery and recovery.

I certainly wish you the very best outcome with this procedure. I know you will have more peace about the situation in general, once this surgery is over. Thankfully, I am an easy stick when it comes to blood draws and IV access, but have an adult daughter with small veins where a butterfly needle is more suited for sticking her. It has been my personal experience that any procedure I have had done in the OR, means an RN will be the one doing the initial stick for IV access. I have witnessed the RN's who question their ability to get a successful stick in the first try, to call an anesthesiologist out to do it, rather than risk an unsuccessful stick. IV sticks are big contributors to patient anxiety, and rather than add to that anxiety, they will defer to someone more skilled in that procedure. Again, best wishes to you!

I am so glad that you have a surgery date and will be able to get this behind you. Everything will go well. Don't worry. Please talk to your doctor about your IV anxiety. He/she might be able to give you something to relax you before the IV is placed. A few years ago, my DD had to have an MRI. She was nervous about the IV. The doctor offered to give her a sedative, but she did not want it. What I did was stand on one side of the table and hold her hand. I used my other hand to turn her face toward me and kept it there to block her vision of the IV. Two nurses stood on the other side of the table and placed the IV very quickly while I occupied her by talking about something she enjoys. DD said it wasn't bad at all. Maybe your DH can be with you when it is being done and do the same thing.
Let us know how your appointment on Thursday goes.

I hope your surgery will go well, Firestripes! I know exactly what you mean about the i.v. - I've had to have quite a few i.v.'s in my life and I always have more anxiety about the darn i.v. than whatever procedure I'm having! Most of them haven't been that bad at all, but it's those one or two bad ones that I always remember! But I'm sure they will use some sort of numbing for you and it will go quickly! Try not to worry about it, it will be over so quickly! Best wishes to you for your i.v., your surgery, and for future good health!
