Re: Sun Screen ~ Double Check your brand!!!!

[ Edited ]

This is a good reminder but it has been reported for years that this is a carcinogen.

I still have in my wallet a card listing that as a dangerous ingredient.

We usually see it as oxybenzone

on sunscreens. There are others. Just do a search.

There are still so many dangerous ingredients in our food and makeup that Europe has long ago banned.

Carragean in ice cream and so many other things, oleoresin in mayonnaise-on and on.

Thanks FDA for not protecting us and there is really no protection in the beauty industry.

@gertrudecloset,

thank you for posting this info however because still so many are unaware even years later.

We often feel if something is being sold here, it is safe. It really is not always the case.

We can all read ingredients, look things up, be our own very good advocates, with medications too.

@on the bay  We're not discussing oxybenzone, an active ingredient in sunscreens. This new study is finding benzene, a VERY carcinogenic industrial solvent, in many common sunscreens.

Re: Sun Screen ~ Double Check your brand!!!!

@decaf,

Oh thank you. My mistake.

Still, it would do us all well to research all ingredients they put in sunscreens.

I'm not surprised by these new findings as there have been toxic ingredients in food and beauty and sunscreens for years.

Zinc is good to use. Without anything else (I hope).

Are any of them being recalled by the FDA? Until then, I'm not concerned.

Who is "Valisure"?? never heard of them.

@SilleeMee  I'm reading they're an independent testing lab, they've sent the results of this study to the FDA asking them to recall these products. I use Target UP and UP Clear Aloe Gel (at the end of this list) to make Vitamin C serum so I'll be following this story.

Re: Sun Screen ~ Double Check your brand!!!!

So, does this mean that physical sunscreens we thought were so much better for us containing zinc oxide are not really better for us, and ones with Avobenzone can be better for our skin and bodies, very confusing. I always urge my daughtet to use only physical sunscreens on my grandkids.

This same article was found today in my email newsletter from People's Pharmacy.

@decaf

There are hundreds of independent testing labs all over the place. Many are funded by private corp in order to use the data to launch new products. I'm leery when that kind of stuff goes on b/c much of it is not completely transparent when it comes to why the testing is being done to begin with. Just sounds fishy.

I'm more concerned about the use of sodium benzoate, a preservative used today in place of parabens. SB converts to benzene in the presence of other ingredients such as ascorbic acid  as well as other food/cosmetic acids.

Re: Sun Screen ~ Double Check your brand!!!!

@SilleeMee  My understanding is the FDA does not regulate OTC health and beauty products.  If no one is policing these big companies (except themselves) I don't see anything wrong with an independent lab bringing this information, IF it is reliable data, to the attention of the FDA and consumer.

Maybe I feel this way more after seeing Part 1 of the HBO documentary about Purdue Pharma and the Oxycotin nightmare. Have you seen it?  The FDA does not have a lily white reputation themselves
