Styling In Between Cleanses - Curly Girls

Hi all. Looking for a little help from my fellow curly girls. I cleanse 2x a week. On my non-cleanse days, I use RTM to re-style my curly hair. Works great! But I find that I have to use alot of RTM to really wet my hair. For those who use RTM for 2nd/3rd day styling, do any of you wet your hair with water before using the RTM? I was thinking this morning that maybe I should try spritzing some water on my hair first to get it a bit wet before using the RTM so I wouldn't have to use so much. Any thoughts? Thanks for your help!

Re: Styling In Between Cleanses - Curly Girls

Arianny, I'm not a Wen user, so excuse me if my post doesn't relate or help at all. I have very curly, frizzy hair and wash with a sulfate-free shampoo two to three times a week.

I do use a silicone-free styling cream and add a little silicone-free styling gel.

Second- and third-day hair is a always a problem. I do find that spritzing my hair with water quite liberally and then running through some light styling product, then scrunching and letting it dry will do a pretty decent job of reviving the curls and reducing the frizz.

To sum up, yes, I think water is important. Sometimes even just spritzing and not adding any more product works okay.

Re: Styling In Between Cleanses - Curly Girls

I have to do the same as you Arriany, but to save money I make my own RTM using Chaz's recipe on facebook. I could wet my hair with plain water, but I have found that I get better results when using just the RTM, as it completely eliminates any frizz I get from de-tangling my hair in the mornings.

Here's the recipe for you, to save you having to look it up:-

6 oz of bottled mineral water, 2 pumps of SC, 2 - 5 drops of oil (depending on what your hair needs, you can add more if you like), either 4 pumps of CC from a 16 oz bottle or 2 pumps of CC from the 32 oz bottle. I find it helps to warm the water first, then add the SC, CC and oil. Shake to mix. I make about 18 oz to 24 oz of it at a time, using an empty 32 oz CC bottle to mix it in.

Using the above recipe saves me a lot of money, as I get through a lot of RTM a month!

I use my hands to dampen my hair in the shower. I work the water in, cleanser style. After my shower, I use the mist.

Re: Styling In Between Cleanses - Curly Girls

My hair is curly, it's not frizzy. I do a wash just once a week and I use a sulfate free shampoo. And I only suds once. Sounds like all that shampoo is drying out your hair. Just thinking about is making me hyperventilating. I wash my hair on Saturday morning, I comb a thick conditioner that is formulated for curly hair through my hair and then I rinse and put my regular conditioner in my hair. I do a quick rinse, leaving most of it in my hair. I squeeze the water out of my hair with a micro fiber towel or an old tee shirt. I never, ever rub my curls. I never use regular towels on my hair. I pull my hair up into a high ponytail and make tight bun or I braid it. I use those cloth covered elastic ponytail holders. I let my hair air dry like that. It tAkes hours, I have thick hair but when I loosen it, it's soft and curly and wavy. I add some leave in condition, shake it and go. When I go to bed, I make a soft ponytail. In the morning, in the shower, I just dunk my hair under the water and comb with my fingers, just to get it damp. Sometime I use a tiny bit of conditioner. Squeeze the water into a microfiber towel, add some leave in conditioner, sometimes a little oil, shake my curls. I'm done. I don't touch my curls after that, I rearrange the curls with my fingers, pin sections back or sometimes put on an elastic headband. Curls need moisturizer and shampoo strips the moisture out. If you want to wash as much as you do, wash with conditioner. If I had dry, frizzy hair; I would never use shampoo. I'd co wash.

I agree with SuzyQ3. I keep a spray bottle of water in my shower and use that on days I don't wash my hair. After I've gotten my hair damp, I spray a refresher like the WEN Replenishing Treatment Mist over it. (I use Ouidad Botanical Boost, which works better for me than the Replenishing Treatment Mist and is formulated for curly hair.) After that, I may scrunch in some of my styling product to help combat frizz. I use Curl Keeper, by Curly Hair Solutions, which works better for me than the WEN styling products.

I love my Replenishing Treatment Mist, but find it works better for my skin than for my hair. I also love to mist it on my pillow before I go to bed.

The OP uses WEN, a cleansing conditioner, so she is co washing, not using shampoo. RTM is a WEN product, Replenishing Treatment Mist, that adds moisture back to your hair and has conditioning benefits instead of just water. It's great for the days you don't cleanse
and want to refresh your style.

Plus, she didn't mention frizz. She wants to know how to refresh her curls.

Unless she is talking to SuzyQ?

No, I don't think the OP was talking to me. I'm pretty sure that I made it patently clear in my post that I was relating my experience with second- and third-day hair. In so doing, I simply described my type of hair.

Is that okay? I surely hope so.

Re: Styling In Between Cleanses - Curly Girls

Aeon - thanks for the RTM recipe. I will definitely try it since I go through so much RTM. Honny, Chynna and Suzy - thanks for sharing your non-cleanse routine. I think I will try spritzing with a little water first and see how that works for my hair. Love the RTM!
