Back when I went to the same stylist for quite awhile, and we were friends, if I happened to need an appointment around the holidays, I would tip her extra as a gift. I never went in just to give her a gift.
Now, I am all over the place getting my hair done so I don't bother. I always tip 20% no matter where I go and feel that is sufficient.

I think 20% is more than sufficient, it is quite generous. It used to be that 10% was the norm, then 15%, now it seems to be 20%. It is almost as if the client is expected to contribute a larger and larger portion of the income.
