@bonnielu  I read this:  turn hands over and if your veins look blue you are cool, if your veins look green, you are warm and if you can't tell, you are neutral.  As far as color of skin you should be able to figure that out.  If you are fair you are very, very light.  If you don't know go for a light medium or better yet go to a cosmetic store to test samples.   Cat Happy

Remember when going to a department store and having your color done was a thing?  My high school best friend took me for my birthday.  The make up lady was so excited I was "a true winter".  My friend was envious.  To this day I have never understood why.  Being one shade darker than Wonder Bread is difficult.  And sometimes painful.

@bonnielu -  I have been interested in color typing since I was asked to be a model at one of Carole Jackson's training sessions! My simple test when people ask me is do you look better in white or off white/cream. If you look good in stark white or soft white next to your face, you're probably cool. If you look better in cream or off white, you're probably warm. If you're warm and you hold bright white up to your face, your skin may look ashy or greyish in color. If cream gives your skin a candlelight glow, you're probably warm. If you already wear a Light foundation and it works for you, that's great! I am "warm," and I usually wear the second shade down from the lightest in most foundations. They have names like Ivory and Cream. My DD is "cool." She is "Nicole Kidman fair." She wears shades like Porcelain and Alabaster, most of which have cool tones. My shades have a warmer tone to them.

I have found that the fairest shades in a foundation line usually lean cool. But a lot of companies are adding more and more shades to their lines, and you can get a warm fair and a cool fair.

If you're near an Ulta or Sephora, they can help you determine whether you are Fair or Light, and whether you lean cool or warm. HTH a little! Smiley Happy

No department stores to check it out.  I am on my own and that is why I asked the question.  Now I know I am COOL and it figures because the colors of fabrics associated with COOL are my choices.

I wear a foundation in a light tone.  BUT I REALLY HAVE NO CLUE WHAT MY EXACT SHADE SHOULD BE.  Fair?  Porcelain?  Light?  I have no idea if I have warm tones or cool tones. How to check this out?  No cosmetic places left in our area, long gone.  Everything is online.

@bonnielu  I can help w/ tone, but shade is not easy w/o trying on the foundation.

Look at the color of the veins on the under side of your wrist. If they look blue...you’re cool, if green then you’re warm. If you can’t tell much difference, go for a neutral tone.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Shanus ! This is sooo cool! Very simple test and so accurate. Confirmed my coolness.

@DrakesMomma  I feel like wonder bread w/o my makeup on, too. Even the shade Porcelain adds color! 😲

@beach-mom  If available, like the Original BE Foundations, I choose neutral... Fairly Light... even though my skin is cool. I find having a touch of yellow in the foundation, cancels out some redness and requires less concealing.

@bonnielu--seriously---there are no malls near you that you go too? Even if you have to go farther away ; I would go to a dept store that has good make up counter, Nordstrom, Macys-- or an Ulta or Sephora and get one of the sales girls to match you to the right shade and tone. then---you can go anywhere and get the right foundation. they actually match the skin on your neck to get the right color--I know, sounds weird but it works. I have blue veins in my wrists but have been told, my tone is warm---I need to do the same thing myself--DD had her foundation done and, holy guacamole---her match was right on and she looks stunning---can't tell she has anything but beautiful skin--she is a fair girl. Now she knows the right foundation to buy.

@wagirl  Blue veins and typed warm? Actually foundation is matched to neck only if shade is close to color of chest. You don’t want a light face/neck sitting on a darker chest...looks weird. You can go a shade darker in foundation or use a little bronzer to mellow out shade difference.

I have 2 shades: my lightest for winter and a shade darker for summer just so I have more color since my chest has many freckles which make it look darker when wearing more revealing summer clothing.

@Shanus--that very well may be, but I never have my chest exposed--I have no breasts due to cancer so I try to cover as much as I can as my chest is not a pretty sight after all the surgery. Maybe you can see around my collar bones and maybe 2 inches below, but my tops are crew necks mostly. But then thats me--DD's  neck and  chest and her face all match with the foundation.
