I had been wanting to try this since last fall. After reading reviews here, and seeing that others had experienced damage to their nails, I held off. Well, on Friday, August 19, I gave in to temptation and went to a nearby shop that advertised Shellac manicures. I got a French manicure and paid $35. The ladies on either side of me have been getting them for months and raved about how well they held up. One lady, a nurse, was in, after three weeks to get hers removed and have another one. She has been getting them for 5 months and experienced no damage to her nails. I noticed that, unlike what I've read here, this shop removed the polish by soaking nails in acetone. Anyway, the technician/owner did a beautiful job and my nails looked wonderful. I was very pleased. Then, the next evening, a little more than 24 hours after the manicure, a bit of one of my nails broke off. It didn't look too bad, fortunately. My nails remained beautiful and shiny, but by the time it had been on for a week, it began to peel up on several of my nails at the nail bed. I used Solar Oil every day, as I usually do. Anyway, by Sunday evening they weren't looking very good, because of the peeling up at the nail base. I decided to remove it myself, instead of returning to the salon and paying them to do it. I got pure acetone for $2 at Sally's. I tried the method I have read about on here (soaking cotton balls in acetone and wrapping them in foil). I left them on 20 minutes for good measure. When I removed them, much of the polish was gone, but not all. I resorted to soaking in acetone. It took a little while, but eventually all the polish was removed. My nails were not damaged at all by the process, thankfully. I was quite disappointed that my $35 manicure only lasted 9 days! I guess my nails just weren't cut out to wear nail polish of any kind It's a shame because I love it so much. I *may* break down and try it again at another nail shop come the Christmas holidays.
