In case you haven't noticed, you've become my 'go to' here on the forum. ![]()
Today's questions is: any idea why my skin cannot tolerate serums of any type? I've tried Isomers, DHC
Maran, organic types from Indie brands and my skin reacts. By that I mean it feels heavy. Hard to explain. Causes irritation, itching. So, I've stayed clear of them for years.
Oily, textured skin here on a senior.
On one of the named brands I had a severe reaction. My skin blistered, turned beet red, itched, burned, became swollen and I had to see a derm. Went on heavy duty topical ointment (thank goodness the dr gave me a sample cuz the stuff costs in excess of $500 at the counter).
All this to say: why do you suppose my skin reacts to serums?
I realize you cannot give medical advice. Your thoughts are appreciated, though. The derm told me to stay away from serums. Have heeded his advice. Just wondering why they don't work for me.

Im not Shanus, but I can answer your question. Having worked for a dermatologist you are allergic to all or some or one ingredient(s) in the serums. Just as the same as some people are allergic to poison ivy, some are not.

@Imaoldhippie @pommom Yes, I agree. There are creams, serums, moisturizers, etc. that some people just react to...negatively. It could be the ingredients, texture or delivery system. Happy you're getting it under control.

@pommom I hope you don't mind my two cents. Serums were not around when my mother was young and she survived with beautiful skin. I never use serums. I have tried a couple (samples) and I thought they were a waste of money which they probably are but beauty companies need to come up with new products.

I agree, @Katcat1 . While I am a user of serums, my mother never did. She used Clinique moisturizer (the yellow one) for years and that is all. She never wore foundation, just lipstick.....had to have her lipstick! She worked in a bank until she was 70 so she was out in the public, but didn't feel the need to glam up. She was so beautiful, at least to me. Others must have thought so too, because everyone told her she had beautiful skin....right up to the end in assisted living. Now me, on the other hand, I love makeup, but never wear lipstick. Go figure.

We are all so different. It doesn't matter the decade or generation. There are different products offered through the many generations and some are new and innovative and worth a try. It's almost like saying we never had seatbelts growing up and we were fine, nothing happened. That doesn't mean you wouldn't use them today to get added protection. I feel the same with skincare.
I love serums, but if I reacted poorly to them I would certainly stay away and use some of the other wonderful products available ... no matter what line or price range.
Enjoy whatever you choose....

Hi I agree with you . I know many here talk about how moms and grandmothers skin looked beautiful with only a few items My mom and aunts did too. I think in addition to few products were lifestyle. My mom passed away at 89 about nine years ago I think their way of life was different. I remember walking everywhere. People went to bed at regular times .People were active not sitting behind computers or cellphones. Home cooking was the norm . Dining out ,fast foods and processed foods were treats or special occasions .I think in addition to good genes ,skin care this played a big part too

I have oily, old VERY sensitive skin as well. In general it is good, very few wrinkles, but I can't tolerate most anti-aging products, almost none of the brightening ones, no scrubs, and a lot of other things.
Serums, the only one that has never affected me at all is Trish McEvoys and I use it sometimes. Philosophy Hope isn't bad but I can't use it every day.
Things that are blue are bad for me.
The thing that is almost a miracle is Trish McEvoy's vitamine C cream IF I only use it a few times a week or even just as needed.
Moisturizers are an issue as well.

I feel your pain I am 56 soon to be 57 and can't do serums either .they sit on my skin, never absorbing no matter what I did. I have oily acne prone skin . A few years ago I tried organic skin care which wrecked havoc on my skin Fragrance is one of the biggest offenders in skincare .I mentioned dr Drays YouTube channel several times bere and she has few videos on fragrance any sneaky fragrances . Things that aren't labelled as a fragrance or things we wouldn't think of as fragrance. I have switched to mostly fragrance free skin care products and it has made a huge difference. I love perfume but that's pretty much the only fragrance I use .There is one serum I do use it's a Korean brand
Pyunkang yul I purchased from Iherb Dr Dray had mentioned it . It's got a honey consistency and no irritation its about $24 .

Because of the issues you mentioned in your posts, I switched to pure unscented goats milk products. I cleanse my face with it, use a goats milk eye cream and facial moisturizer. Absolutely does the job. No tightness or allergic reaction. I buy the Beekman Bros. scented soaps for bathing. Leaves my bathroom smelling SO good.
I find that using goats milk products leaves no residue the heavy laden 'moisturizing' soaps leave on my skin. Just pure cleanliness. Highly recommend.
