I've heard on this board that hair products with silcones are not good for your hair. Why is that and what shampoo and conditioner would you recommend without them? I have a lot of fine color treated hair that is always looking frizzy. Thanks!

Silicones coat the hair and prevent product from penetrating.Maybe that is good for the hair type that we share..I ha e tried everything but the best I have found is tweaked from hsn.I am not saying my hair is great but it isn’t as frizzy.

Silicones build up on hair and prevent not only products from penetrating but also moisture from the air. They also require a sulfate shampoo to remove. I don't use sulfates because I color my hair. I only actually shampoo once a week too.
I am currently using Raw Curls shampoo (only available online) and it's ok, but I'll probably look for something else when I'm done with it. I'm a member of a curly group so this is often discussed. There's a line called Not Your Mother's Naturals that has several shampoos that would be sufate and silicone-free. It has the the the Naturals, not their regular line. I find them at my grocery store. I haven't tried their shampoos, but I do use one of their leave-in conditioners.

The Briogeo line is free of sulfates, silicones, parabens, etc. and has some great products. They are on the pricey side however. I try to stock up when Sephora has their VIB sale.

@dex, I have never figured out how to shower without washing my hair. So, I Co-wash which is the same as you using Wen. I have had some success with using my 2nd day hair routine after a shower though. Not quite as good though. My 2nd day hair is first getting the tangles out which of course ends up in major frizz. Then I spritz with water followed by spritzing with a styling cream dissolved in water. For me that is Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk. After that I can scrunch a little and be done.

@Icegoddess Short (pixie), naturally curly hair & I only use silicone & sulfate free products, if possible. Silicone not only coats the hair and keeps it from getting the moisture it needs, it also keeps deep conditioners from penetrating. The more conditioning, the less frizz.
When I shower & am not going to wash my hair, I put on a clear, inexpensive, plastic shower cap ( purchase from Sally’s in pkg. of 12). Then a Turbie Twist towel. No moisture gets through to my hair. I also have a hand held shower head so I can direct the water away from my hair and just on my body.

When I accepted my curls and texture, stopped shampooing every day, drying out my hair w/ silicones, sulfates, curling irons, flat irons, etc. is when I stopped having frizz,
The frizz is simply the hair sucking moisture from the air (doesn’t have enough of its own from conditioners) causing it to swell....frizz. I shampoo 3 times a week, the other days either wet my hair down in the shower and add conditioner....leave in until finished showering. If I don’t want to wet it, the Turbie Twist method. Oh, don’t forget microber towels only and satin pillowcases so hair slides and doesn’t “catch” which causes split ends and breakage.
