Serums -- Necessary??

Is it necessary to use a serum after cleansing, then moisturizer, primer and makeup?

I have found that most of the serums either have perfume in them or feel oily and I break out with one or two pimples on my face; which usually never happen

I know I have a lot of redness but is there one that doesn't seem to have that oily feeling?

I even purchased the one from philosophy Keep the Peace and I just put it on my hand and it feels oily. That even gave me a pimple

I would definitely appreciate all answers; thanks in advance; Peg
