Sensitive/Rosacea Folks--What Skincare???

[ Edited ]

I have very sensitive skin with rosacea and easily break out with the wrong product. I know everyone is different and I have to accept the fact that there will be trial and error. I'm just curious what others have found success with in terms of skincare. I want healthy looking skin first and foremost; second, I want to tackle both the developing lines around my eyes and bad bags/dark circles (probably genetic). I so want to try Perricone and all of these other brands that have a big following, but I know it's probably asking for trouble. Heck, even Josie Maran's milk product messed me up. Thanks in advance for any direction.

Re: Sensitive/Rosacea Folks--What Skincare???

I have it but now that I'm much older it comes and goes.  Just had it explode (so to speak) the other night.  It gets red hot, burns, itches and swells up.

I sometimes put a cold wash rag over it.  I took two Motrin and when I woke up it was gone.

If your's is bad you should probably go to the Dermatologist.  He can give  you some cream that has some steroid in it.  It should get rid of it quickly (steroids).

I don't know your age, but the Dr will take that into account (steroids).  Don't be picking at it because it will scar.

Most of the articles I saw when I looked it up said a person should see a Dermatologist.  Only you can decide if it's worth it, but I wouldn't mess around it is your face.  I used to use the steroid cream and it cleared it up very quickly and I'd do it again if it got bad.

Re: Sensitive/Rosacea Folks--What Skincare???

@AnnaGabbyMama - As you stated, there's a lot of trial and error as well as what works for one person may not work for another.  Working closely with my derm, we have determined (after allergy testing) that I must avoid propylene glycol and anything with fragrance.  She said to make sure the products say fragrance free -- not unscented as those contain a fragrance masking agent.  Also, she said that anti-aging products with Retin A and most of those with retinol should be avoided as well as glycolic, AHA, and BHA acids.  I use very gentle products that contain a variety of antioxidants.  Since following this skin care routine for close to three years now my rosacea is almost nonexistent and rarely ever flares. Of course, the improvements didn't occur overnight, but did take several months.  I find now that I usually only have to use my MetroCream (not MetroGel as it contains propylene glycol) about every 3 or 4 days.   Prior to implementing my updated routine, I was using the MetroCream twice a day.

My routine may or may not work for you, but I hope this information is helpful in your journey to a healthier complexion.

Like you, I'm unable to use all the fragrance and fillers in most products. Where do you find MetroCreme? Years ago, I was able to use 5% salcycdic acid bar soap which kept my skin lovely. Sadly, it was taken off the market even with a prescription.

Have recently tried Philosophy's 5% salacycdic mask, but find it very drying. Have already cancelled my second shipment as I've not begun to finish the original tube. Need something gentle on my 69-year old skin, but also effective with the Roseacia and Lupus flares. TIA!

I have gone to a dermatologiist for years.  She has prescribed Finacea for the rosecea and Aczone to help with the breakouts.  Also, no caffiene or spicy foods.  Stress also affects, but then stress affects everything.

I agree you should definitely see a dermatologist.  After much trial and error over many years, what finally stopped my Rosacea was a product that isn't even made for Rosacea.  Everyone's skin is different.

My flare-ups have almost totally disappeared as I've aged -- if that's something to look forward to.  LOL

Re: Sensitive/Rosacea Folks--What Skincare???

Unfortunately you are right -- it is a trial and error thing and what works for one may not work for another.

I have had it for several years now. I had the redness, broken caps, etc. for a long time and was just told --- it's your sensitive skin.  Then, I started breaking out very badly and I was in my late 50's!!!!  I never had acne as a teenager.  I went to the derm. yet again and was told, yup --- it's Rosacea!  So I was given Metrogel.  This has really helped with the redness.  I use it every morning before I apply my moisurizer.

Incidentally, good advice given by other posters.  Avoid fragrance in your facial products!!!!  I have had the best luck using cream cleansers.  No soap or scrubs or anti-aging ingredients.

As for what I apply to my skin for makeup --- mineral makeups seem to be the least offensive.  One that I use is Physician's Formula.

Re: Sensitive/Rosacea Folks--What Skincare???

@AnnaGabbyMama I've been going to a dermatologist for acne for a long time. What I've learned is that they also do a lot of trial and error. In addition, they hardly consider over the counter products. I find that prescriptions alone are not enough to keep my skin clear and under control.

Paula's Choice has a whole line for sensitive skin prone to redness. I also highly recommend her Resist Advanced Replenishing Toner; it's very soothing. It immediately calms my skin down. I have also used Lush's Aquamarina Cleanser as a mask for a very long time. Whenever my skin is irritated or dry, I leave it on for a while and since is has calamine it also helps soothe and calm my skin.

I highly recommend Finacea, which I currently use. It's very gentle. For the lines, try to see if you can tolerate peptides that contain Matrixyl. Studies show they work as well as retinol over time but are gentle on skin.

I also broke out using JM's Milk. I highly recommend you try to find anti-aging products that work for you. As someone who has battled acne, our skin when out of control can be unpredictable and will make any signs of aging look worse.

Try to see if you can tolerate any essential or organic oils. I've discovered recently the power of tea tree oil and it has improved my skin so much. There are most likely natural products that will work wonders for your skin. I strongly believe most of the solutions to all health issues are found in nature.

Re: Sensitive/Rosacea Folks--What Skincare???

I have similar issues and here's what works for me:

Clarisonic facial brush w/ radiance head.....very soft and gentle but works

Purity cleanser for the face or Dr. Denese facial cleanser

I use the Dr. Denes line of skincare and have had very good luck with the products. Here is what I would suggest to start.

Dream cream---moisutrizer (for dayn/night)

Eye --MD33Eye or eye fixer upper duo (MD33 is exceptional but eye fixer upper is a bit more gentle)

Wrinkle triple strength for neck or face--for serious treatment for that problem.

Hydroshield serum works wonders if your skin is also very dry. Mine is but I have to be careful to only use the few drops as directed or I will get a few breakouts. It is very gentle but works.

I hope you get the same relief and results that I have.

I've been using Paula's Choice since 1995.  It's color free, fragrance free, not packaged in jars, no animal testing and 60 day guarantee.  You can call and ask for small samples.
