On 1/1/2015 libbey said:My mom,who had been gone for 6 years now, would tell me when I go shopping and have an item in my hand to ask myself.." do I really need it or really want it" then I have added another question " would a vacation be better" Its suprising a wonderful tool to use! I put the money of the item put back into a jar. I will be going to Purto Rico in June! Just in shipping charges I have saved over $100 in a few months! I use this method for just about everything....even Walmart!
This is a great idea! Our grandson will graduate from high school in a year and a half and we want to go. He lives in New York so this would be a good way to save . I'll just ask myself do I need this or do I want to go to the graduation.

I'm in. My first committment was to make time every weekend to purge and clean out stuff even if it's only a couple of hours. The progress has been inspiring.
I also will use up my beauty products before I order anymore I can't believe how much I've accumulated. All the skincare products that I no longer use I am using them as body and or hand lotions.

A few suggestions that I plan on implementing just from the great suggestions from other woman here. Let's be mindful, slow down and think before the purchase. What's the rush? I plan on reading from this thread each day as well, reinforce what we are all trying to do and gather strength and support.

Great idea, would love to cut back even more, especially for everyday needs as opposed to wants.

I am totally in.
I recently, after 44 years, lost my job due to eliminations of jobs. The first thing I did was return all the work clothes with tags as I no longer needed to "dress" for work. I also moved back home -forcing me to clean everything. Was this a wakeup call! From clothes to shoes, handbags, makeup,Wen,Philosophy. Yikes. That was August 2014. I have since neatly arranged all beauty items by brand , began using up the "sample" items from kits or travel size items to help with storage. Even though many items were on sale-I have enough to last me a lifetime.
I now think of all the hours of packing and unpacking and dollars spent only to store items.
I try to steer away from the aisles in Target,Walmart, etc. that tempt me and remind myself I have plenty at home to pick from.
In the spring,I plan on garage sale or sales (more likely) to get rid of things I thought I needed.
Great thread.

I threw out old self tanners today.
I finally figured out Amazon Prime on our main tv. I already have it on bedroom tv (watching 'How I Met Your Mother"" still in my PJs now)
Has anyone gotten rid of their cable for internet viewing? I know we'd have to have a scaled back package with sports. I'd love to dump the rest of it.

I want to stay on straight and narrow. don't want to ever use that much credit again. cut up all my cards.

Going to start the New Year by spending an hour in the basement today starting clean up. DS will help. He is motivated, as his new GF is coming to visit for a few days next week. It's purge time. I will enjoy the things I already own. I need nothing besides food. I will keep a written daily diary. I want to get the same thrill this year from saving that I did from buying.
Good Luck all!
