I love the idea of cleaning out an entire closet and then only putting clothes in as I wear them. I hope to try this for spring/summer and then fall/winter. I am recently retired and need to purge but find it hard to do. I have tried reversing the hangars but that is not going so great. Keep this thread going as I need motivation.
Thanks to all for the ideas.

I love the idea also, but simply don't have the room to accomplish that, at best I can turn hangers around, which I haven't yet done.

I have packed up most of my winter clothes and now have a box ready to go to Goodwill. I will have more to add as I continue the seasonal change-over.
I thought I needed some bag clips, but looked a little deeper in the drawer and there were plenty. That motivated me to clean out that drawer!

Just called me out to go through the shoe rack next to the door...he held up each pair and I said yea or nay. Kept a couple pair of sneakers, a pair of Birkies, my snow boots and an old pair of loafers I wear when the grass is wet/muddy and I need to be outside. The rest are in the Goodwill box. (my "good" shoes are in my bedroom closet).
I can't procrastinate with that fella here...like Old Man River, he just keeps rollin' along!
Is he available on-loan? It sounds he is just what I need to force me to tackle the stuff I seem to always put off.

March has been tough so far...My BFF's father passed away after a very long life. I think we all thought he would outlive us and set some sort of record... But, that sweet and gentle man came to a peaceful end at almost 99 years of age and much of my past 2 weeks has been spent worrying about her and her family, travelling to the funeral, getting my tax return done in between the other stuff, cancelling my shoulder surgery due to funeral and then rescheduling it for later this month, also helping hubby get over an injury he suffered in a fall, the garage door opener broke, etc.
Not much has gotten sorted here since February. It's slow going and I'm trying to have patience. I've already gone way over budget this month, too. Going to just have to face the fact that sometimes "sheet" happens and "it is what it is". Going to just get back on track starting tomorrow with budget (and my diet) and will also list some stuff on eBay now that things are simmering down a little. Going to enlist my son with helping my husband get a new garage door opener installed this weekend. I have to have a functioning one when I am permitted to drive a few days after the upcoming surgery. Can't be mucking about worrying about getting the car in garage with a sling on... ![]()
BTW, thank you, ladies. This discussion about button down shirts has given me an idea...I'm going to go to Goodwill tomorrow and buy a few large men's shirts for cheap. They will be much easier to get on and off after the operation because I won't be allowed to lift my arm above a neutral position and over my head and wear pullovers for a while. I also have to keep the arm in a 90 degree sling as much as possible immediately afterward and a long sleeve shirt , semi rolled up, will also be protection for the arm from the fabric of the sling...

Anotherview2--If I may ask, what kind of shoulder surgery are you having? I had a torn labrum 9 years ago and went through that surgery. Pull on shirts are actually not that hard to deal with--bad arm in first when you put on, bad arm out last when you take off. I had a sling on 24/7 for 6 weeks after the surgery. The worst thing for me was sleeping in it. During my last pre-op visit with the doctor, I was more concerned about a hairy armpit because it was summer, so he had to figure out how I could shave during that time. My doc was quite entertained by me. I wore tank tops a lot because they were the easiest thing to wear. I think you will find any kind of knit shirt will work.
I wish you a lot of luck with your surgery, having been there done that won't EVER do anything like it again!

I actually had a couple of custom slings made because the hospital one was so ugly.

Dr. Kelli - sending good thoughts your way regarding healing. I trust you'll feel much better soon. Take care of yourself. Hope you have some good help nearby.
I can relate to some of your comments. Our weekends are being taken over by other priorities. Eeek. But we'll roll with it! Have a productive weekend!

DRKelli,
Rotator cuff tear from bone spurs. The spurs will be shaved down and the torn tendons mended. The MRI showed that the tendons were the issue. Not sure the exact name of the particular group of tendons involved where it all joins together. I played loads of tennis over the years but, ultimately the first tear I really felt was one that happened in the gym on a weight machine about a 1 1/2 to 2 yrs ago. For the last couple of years, the tendons have been getting cut, they repair somewhat, and then they get recut by some bone spurs. Each time it happens lately, it hurts worse than the last time to the point it is becoming debilitating. I also developed arthritis and bursitis in the area. It's on my right and I am right handed. I also tore the bicep in that arm about 10 years ago and believe it or not, so far anyway, that was more painful. I had PT for that, no surgery due to size of tear but, man did that HURT! Tennis really hasn't done me any favors and I stopped playing a few years ago...
BTW, they made me sign a form that said I knew before having this done that I would be required to wear the sling 24/7 for 4-6 weeks (most likely 6) and that I would cooperate with the PT necessary to make this work.
Thanks for the clothing ideas! It's warm here so tank tops will likely be a way to go for me.
I had shots into and then PT on the illiotibial band on my left leg last year and had good results so I made sure that I got the same physical therapy assistant from last year lined up to do my initial evaluation the day after surgery and then to put me through my paces of the weeks of PT afterward. He is really good.
I hope your results were good!

Hi everyone, haven't posted for a while, but I do want to continue some simplification of my household.
January I did a lot of purging of clothes and books. February I scanned old/antique family photos that I borrowed from my sister-in-law. Now they're all on my computer and backed up on a disc. Early March I was busy with taxes, and grateful that I'm pretty organized at keeping records. I'm also sewing a comforter using up some of my fabric stash.
I've become aware of 2 areas in my life that could probably use some simplification. One is that I love to take pictures, and end up with innumerable photos that have to be labeled, organized, and backed up. I love taking photos, but it also takes up a lot of my time. I need to find a healthy balance there.
Another problem area is how many T.V. recordings I have. I automatically record A LOT of programs, and then I feel "obligated" to watch them. My favorites also get recorded to DVDs to keep. Hmm... I'm going to need to work on that. I should be more ruthless about T.V. shows that I no longer enjoy watching. I need to find a healthy balance in this area too.
Has anyone else found that digital photos and digital T.V. recording, both cheap and easy, might not be simplifying their life after all?
