I posted a few days again regarding large, painful bumps on my chin. Well, the derm. feels I have Rosacea. Just what I need --- another chronic condition to deal with!
I know this topic has been discussed before, but could I please impose on you here to give me some advice and also share what works and what doesn't?
I have very, very sensitive skin. What I thought over a long time that was merely just sensitivity (redness in cheek area, burning, itching, etc.) must have been the beginnings of Rosacea. Also, the little red veins and even the constant eye problems --- dry, itching.
Now, they say just use Metrogel twice a day. I have a feeling this will be very drying to me. Can you use a moisturizer over this stuff? I did not think to ask. She did say that after it dried that I could apply makeup if I wished.
She did not indicate any particular cleanser or moisturizer, etc to use. I think I was kind of shocked when she told me what I had, and I kind of lost my tongue!!!!
If you could offer some help here, I'd appreciate it.

I have mild Rosacea. I didn't try Metrogel because in Metrogel's other forms (Flagil and one other), my system didn't tolerate them well.
My doctor gave me a sample of Finacea. It did absolutely nothing. I checked with the pharmacy and my co-pay for a prescription of it would be $200. I didn't want to pay that kind of money for something that wasn't working.
Someone here suggested Basis soap. It's just a bar of soap. I thought I'd try it. Now, it's no miracle worker, at least for me, but what it HAS helped with is the flakiness that comes with Rosacea and the hard little bumps and my breakouts don't seem to be as severe. I use my regular cleanser (Principal Secret Advanced) and then wash my face lightly with the Basis soap. It only costs a few dollars. Worth a try.
I also recently.... very recently bought some Clinique Redness Solutions Soothing Cleanser and have used it a few times. Too early to tell on that.
Oh, on the Metrogel?? Yes, you can use a moisturizer over it. At least with Fiancea you could so I assume you could with Metrogel also.
I've been unsuccessful in finding my Rosacea "trigger". Personally, for me, I think it's stress.

I have rosacea, I've had it for years. I was using Metro Gel for years with no improvement on the redness (but it it supposed to slow the spreading of it). My new derm put me on Retin A/Trentinoin and Metro Gel together and the improvement is amazing. I have almost no redness most days. The Retin A allows the Metro gel to get deep into the skin to work.
I use Retin A at night and Metro Gel during the day.
She also has me using Vanicream Soap and Vanicream Lite Lotion (I get both at Costco). The soap is nice and mild and doesn't dry my face at all. The Vanicream Lite Lotion is still too heavy to wear under makeup, so I only use it at night and use a different, lighter moisturizer for day.
You are only supposed to use very little of the Metro Gel each time. It shouldn't dry your skin.

I read in another beauty forum where someone was having success combating the problem with a colloidal silver ointment. I would certainly consult a derm about this.

Now that the initial shock as worn off, you might want to call or return to your derm with a list of questions. Sorry you got this diagnosis, but you will need to figure out for yourself what works and what doesn't.
I learned I had rosacea about 15 years ago (suspected before then). Doc gave me MetroGel and Finacea - neither one of them worked for me. I also ordered some products from a rosacea website - expensive and didn't help.
Everyone is different. For me, it's been a series of hits and misses and experimentation. When I find facial products I like and that don't irritate, I stay with them. Sometimes I have a flare-up for no apparent reason. Sometimes my skin will be perfectly clear for weeks at a time. You just never know.
Good Luck!

Thanks, everyone!
I did, indeed, go to a derm. and they are the ones who diagnosed me and prescribed the Metro Gel. I have used it twice so far - last night and this morning. I have looked it up various places on-line and did see that you can use moisturizer over it. This is a good thing!
I appreciate all the suggestions and tips that you have posted.
Could anyone share the type of makeup that you use? I read also that mineral makeup seems to be a rather good choice. And that the fewer things and steps you use, the better.
I just want to do all that I can to have decent skin. This has come as a shock to me. My skin has always been very persnickety and I never had perfect skin, but it was very clear, no breakouts and was smooth and nice. Now, at this late stage in my life, having to battle this, along with all of my other health problems is just a real kick in the teeth. Plus, not to mention, certainly does no good for your confidence. Of which I had little to begin with!!!
I thank everyone for taking the time to post.
If anyone thinks of anything else they would like to share or just post about regarding their problems with this, or have other items which have helped them, I'd be thrilled to read them. Blessings!!!

I use BE READY, original loose or Serum Foundation over the metro gel with no issues/rolling.

Bumps on my chin were how I began my adventure w/rosacea. It's a lot of trial and error w/skincare and color. Use only 1 new product at a time and give it at least 2 weeks; I always purchase from Sephora or Nordstrom b/c of their generous return policies. I use Erno Laszlo oil and soap, tonic and then incorporate Skinn serum and YP cream.
Metrogel works well for me or if a flare is pretty bad I have to get minocycline for 30 days which usually does the trick.
I use Bobbi Brown Skin, Chanel Vitalumiere, or Skinn Plasma foundation w/no issues.
I am sub type 2-papular and pustular breakouts, so when it's bad it's also ugly.
