@Katilein,   For thickening my hair, I use Aquage thickening spray gel.  It's a fine mist you spray on damp hair.  Now if you only want it at the roots then just spray at that area and comb that area in.  This product does deliver and does thicken your hair.  Of course it will wash out but it is the best thickening product I have used and I have used it for years now.  Cat Wink

An inexpensive option is Got2be powderful volumisinv powder.  It is around $4 at ultra and some drug stores. It is silica powder and will give you volume in the roots.  Too much Is not good so start slow!

I LOVE this product !!!   I just ordered several from Ulta because I never want to be without it.  The price increased so much recently at Walmart that I looked elsewhere and found it at Ulta for $ 4.00 and I could use the coupon on my Ulta mailer.  I use this every single day on my baby fine hair.  I usually put it on my fingertips and rub it into my hair because you are correct in that it is very powerful and it will be hard to put finishing touches on your hair if you use too much.  I dry my hair, style it and then use the Got2be powder sparingly.  I sometimes use it as a touchup but not often as it helps my hair stay puffy all day long.  I then use Nick Chavez volumizing hair spray so I don't weigh my hair down.  No conditioner for me either.  At 58, I still have dark hair without coloring it so I use the Joan Rivers Great Hair Day in brunette to color my scalp because it looks so white against my dark hair.  That also helps to make my hair look more full.
