Anyone have any suggestions re what nighttime moisturizer can be used after retinol. Have tried argon oil, hope in a jar, okay, etc. My dermatologist said to use plain moisturizer???

@Nana4x --I have been using Peter Thomas Roths retinol serum and his moisturizer--it was a TSV last year, I think, that had the moisturizer included along with the serum and  cleanser too. I have been using the serum for a few years now--works great for me, and have used whatever moistuizer I have over it at night. Never had an issue with any of them. Use your fave.

Re: Retinol and nighttime moisturizer

CeraVe PM is a very good basic moisturizer that is recommend by many dermatologists.  I'm surprised he left you hanging like that.

Are you using actual retinol or prescription strength Retin A/Tretinoin?  If you're using prescription strength, I suggest doing your evening cleanse, any serums, and moisturizer first, like an hour before bedtime. Then, at bedtime, just apply the Retin A and go to bed.  Go slow on the Retin A and ease it into your routine.

I think your dermatologist was right. I'm using PTR's retinol and decided on a light, inexpensive moisturizer afterwards. I'm using Neutrogena's Hydro Boost Gel Cream (Extra Dry) with Hyaluronic Acid. I'm having good results. Used together, I have no skin irritation. They seem to complement one another.

A "plain moisturizer" means one that doesn't contain any active ingredients such as vitamin C, BHAs/AHAs or other acids just to name a few but there are several more. Active ingredients such as those can interfere with retinol.

Right now I'm using Olay Regenerist nighttime moisterizer but I have used Philosophy hope in a jar both after PTR retinol serum no issues with either one. Go for whatever is best for your skin type. My skin type is normal now but I had a hx of acne many years ago.

Re: Retinol and nighttime moisturizer

@Nana4x  I do use moisturizer 7 days/week morning and night.  When I add retinal, I just use whatever moisturizer I've had open at the time.

I've used various moisturizers and never noticed they made all that much difference.  Guess I would agree with your dermatologist.

Re: Retinol and nighttime moisturizer

For years I've used a 2.5 percent retinol cream with hyaluronic acid and vitamins in it. No extra moisturizer needed. One and done. I'm sure there are other retinol creams out there that are moisturizing so no extra moisturizer (no layering) is required.

I'm using Naturium Retinol (essences first, serums after) and then my moisturizer...either Naturium or Tatcha.  I haven't had any problems.
