I shuddered at the recent news of ULTA repackaging returned cosmetics. I wonder how many companies do that? It's absolutely disgusting. In the age of Hep C, HIV, Herpes and other infectious diseases, how can companies do that?! May be that's why I got blepharitis and now can't wear any eye makeup anymore. I alwyas thought that sealed products are unused and untouched. Boy was I wrong. I would never dream of using a tester or having a makeover in a store. Now you can't even trust "new" products.

I am also wondering now about ordering cosmetics online from Sephora, Nordstrom, etc. Some of the lip glosses and other lip products are in a box, but not sealed in cellophane. They could have been tried on and returned. When I buy lip items at Macy's (in person), the salesperson goes to a drawer and gets (what I assume) is a fresh one out to sell me. I so love ordering online though.

I also buy many cosmetic & beauty products online, some directly from the company site, some here/hsn/evine, some amazon.
I find that it doesn't seem to matter where you purchase, nor from which reputable high end company, there are A LOT who do not put safety seals on their products.
I HATE THIS PRACTICE.
These companies spend a lot of money on product packaging. Why not go just the itty bitty little extra step to order clear safety seals and put them on their boxes, packaging, tubes, bottles whatever the container may be.
And after the jar, bottle, tube has placed inside the box, why not go that EXTRA step and seal the flap like the toothpaste companies do?
Both practices sound pretty inexpensive, quick, easy, and SAFE.

I thought it was illegal to sell repackaged/returned cosmetics.

@TW why would you think a sealed product was used. I'm thinking the ones repackaged in the store would be missing the seals.

Mally Beauty has done it, her old company did. Not sure if the new company practices this. I got used old eye makeup twisted up to look full, but twisted down it was half full and all over the inside of the tube from rubbing from being used-so it wasn't a production error. Gross!

See - if you buy drug store MU it is almost always bubble wrapped. Another reason beside saving money to buy drug store products.

I'm discovering a lot of these products are just as good anyway. Lots of improvements at a much better value. Of course, I've never suspected that I was getting used products when ordering by mail. If any of these complaints are true, that's awful.

A gruesome but true story - I once had a patient with flesh eating bacterial infection on his cheek. Apparently, he was at some sort of church retreat, had forgotten shaving cream and saw some in the BR so he used it. While shaving he nicked his cheek. The nick got infected - he ended up in ICU with this horrible infection. Many surgeries - skin grafts - a very long story and about 6 months out of his life. His wife often said I wish I knew whose shaving cream that was so I could warn them to throw it away. This poor guy never in a million years thought someone at his church would give him this horrible infection.
