Registering a pet's microchip

sorry to post here, but nothing ever shows up from the pet forum..

I adopted two cats who are microchipped, and I have no idea how/where to register my info. I've never had a microchipped pet before. I did a quick search and found a site I have to pay to register at...are you supposed to pay for this kind of thing? I just want to know what I'm getting into. Thanks for any info!
