It is to prevent distractions during class, which for 11-14 year olds can be very easy. Since I teach at a private school, if you want to go dye your hair, go to a different school with a different policy. We have implemented this policy for 10 years.
It may sound too controlling to some, but I like it. From all I hear about what goes on in schools some of these minor rules related to self expression and discipline could go a long way in bringing the focus of going to school back to education.
In my experience as a middle school teacher, the unnatural hair colors are done for one purpose: to get attention.

Did you open the link in post #8? that is absolutely not an unnatural hair color - that is MY hair color when I was young. There is absolutely nothing wrong with how that child looks.
There is a lot of discrimination in the world against red hair - for some reason it really offends some people.

It's red-iculous

I just read, in a related story, that this incident has created a minor firestorm in the Muscle Shoals community. Apparently this has galvanized redheads of all sorts, natural and dyed, and of various hues. They've taken to the social media to publicize the situation, and nearly everyone agrees that the school was in the wrong. The girl's family has retained a lawyer - film at eleven!

If they have a policy like this, I hope it goes for teachers too. No colored hair for anyone, any color!

I did. I don't know what this girl's 'natural' hair color is. In the second picture, it looks unnatural to me. There is nothing wrong with students learning to follow rules. We cannot express ourselves in any way we want in the real world if we expect to be successful adults. Hair isn't a huge deal, but does contribute to the impression others have of us.
By the way, I have red heads in my family, but the reds don't border on blue or purple.

I retired from a public school district & worked middle & high schools when the craze was to dye hair with kool aid. We couldn't do anything about it and just had to ignore it. I especially liked the pink & the green.

Teachers and students are not equals. Teachers should set a good example for the students by following the professional guidelines of their school. I doubt that a school would send a student home for having the same hair color as a teacher has, but as far as not being able to cover gray hair or enhance a color, teachers should be able to do whatever they want. IMHO

Her hair color looks normal to me, I have known women with that color hair, naturally (both pictures!)
