Recommendation for Nail Repair ?? (Edge Rips)?

Hi Beauties .. :-) When I was a teen, the way to fix a nail that was beginning to tear at the edge, by the cuticle was to take a thin, small patch of toilet paper and place it on the rip and place nail polish over it. Of course I don't recall it helping much and eventually I lost the entire tip of the nail. I especially have a damaged nail from childhood which desperately needs this.

What do you recommend, or have you tried that will stop a rip in the nail from progressing and breaking off the tip of the nail? Thanks! :-)
