Questioning the use of primer.

I can’t believe I used to put foundation just on my skin. The thought now skeeves me for some reason now. I like to have something on my skin then primer. Well twice at Estée Lauder and Clinique both SA’s put moisturizer on me and then foundation. I really liked the way it looked and in summer I skew oilier and it still looked great. Now I’m wondering if I should just toss my primers because I’m thinking they are not really adding anything to help. Anyone else jump off the primer bandwagon?

Re: Questioning the use of primer.

I use primer to camouflage my larger pores.  They're not as large as they used to be, but still visible.  So, no, not getting off the primer bandwagon.  However, I'm not convinced eyeshadow primer does much except the ones specifically for glitter.  Those work.

Hi @Allthingsgirly67

I don't wear foundation, but I use primer.  The main thing is-- it has to a blurring primer.  I never really noticed any difference with or without primer when I used to wear foundation.  A good blurring primer, I like Hourglass, is enough coverage for me.  I can't be without it.

I don't use a primer. I cleanse, apply sunscreen. and then foundation. I don't like layering a lot of products or doing a lot of steps.

Re: Questioning the use of primer.

I've found that facial primer is too oily for my combination skin but I get anxious if I start running out of my eye primer. I wear eyeliner every day, no matter what, and it stays on if I use primer. When I don't, the liner is gone in a couple hours. During covid, my go-to liner (NARS) wasn't available so I had to settle for some other brands. Now that it's available, I have two in my closet and, when I am done with one of those, I immediately order another 2.

Re: Questioning the use of primer.

I use primer but mix a touch of foundation in with it--seems to look ok. I am using clear primer right now--trying to use it up first. Smashbox is really good and have used Spackle too. I would perfer no foundation alone,  so I also use a CC or BB cream--trying to use that up too.

@Allthingsgirly67   I use primer on brides that need makeup to last under lights, etc.

Personally, I never use it. My makeup, on a usual day, doesn't stay on more than 6 hours. Vit. C serum and my  moisturizer is sufficient. My SPF is the last step before foundation. I just don't want to add the extra layer of a primer.

Re: Questioning the use of primer.

I've tried a few different primers and have never noticed any difference in how my makeup looked. I've tried it on one side of my face just to see if it made a difference. No difference. Besides that, I use vitamin C serum And sunscreen, then foundation. That's enough layers. I don't understand how some women can use all these different products before foundation. It ends up pilling on me.

Re: Questioning the use of primer.

I quit using primer several years ago...just didn't notice any difference in how my foundation looked, or how long it lasted.

When I was still working, I put makeup on at around 6:30 a.m., and it was still there at 9:00 p.m.--whether or not I used primer. The only thing I would touch up during the day was lipstick. I have oily skin, and if I got shiny, I would blot with a tissue. The only time I used powder was if I had an evening event after work.

Re: Questioning the use of primer.

If you have oily skin, large pores or discolorations then primers can help the appearance of your skin even if you don't wear foundation...and when you do need a foundation then a primer can help make your skin look good and stay looking good also.
