Re: Question for hair color professionals.

since she brought up the hair washing and coloring thing I have a question too: I generally wash my hair one day and then do the color the next. Should I be doing that any differently?

Re: Question for hair color professionals.

I know that I try to color my hair when it is dirty. When I plan to color, I wash on Thursday, not on Friday, then color on Saturday, wash on Monday. I use a boar bristle brush to pull through my naturally oily hair, and brush this way normally every night and morning, though I wash every night. I do a deep conditioning Thursday night with some WalMart deep conditioner, right now I think it is something by L'oreal. It is what I have right now but normally have very oily hair needing to wash every night.Neutrogena Clean Replenishing Deep Recovery Hair Mask, 6 oz

Which Joico KPAK do you use? There seem to be several on Amazon.

For a treatment I use Joico Kpak Reconstructing Treatment. This is not a conditioner and offers no moisturizing at all. It simply adds proteins 19 essential amino acids. I also like KPAK Liquid Reconstructor Balm. It is great to spray on after shampooing and conditioner. Works quickly in adding proteins and amino acids for the finest/damaged/porous hair.

After the color I use a good moisturizer, you can use any you like. I like a few different ones but most often use Joico Recovery Moisture Treatment Balm.

Like I said though, you can use any good moisturizer that you happen to love.

I have super fine, super thick, long pixie hair. It is normally very healthy because I don't use conditioners but do brush my natural oils out with a boar brush. Which Joico shampoo would be best for my red dyed hair without adding too much moisture? I find those moisturizing shampoos to add too much and weigh my hair down.

I am the same way with moisturizing shampoos. I have hair that tends to be on the oily side and I wash it everyday but I do not usually use moisturizing shampoos.

I do know the Color Therapy Shampoo was very popular with a lot of my clients. For my hair I can use a Suave Shampoo or a $50 bottle of shampoo and for me, there is absolutely no difference. LOL! Sorry I couldn't be more helpful there.

I have to wash my hair daily or my roots get oily and my ends dry and brittle. Those in these forums that recognize me know I am a shampoo junkie and tried a butt load of hair products. I find Ion sulfate free color shampoo and Ion defence Color Sealer to be the best color protection shampoo/conditioner I ever tried. It also makes my fine hair feel thick. I also use

I also use ION color Moisture conditioner ( I think this is the correct Image) Smells EXACTLY like the Vidal Sassoon from the 1070s/80s that smelled like almond

Re: Question for hair color professionals.

My stylist washes my hair after coloring it, then tells me to wait 24 hours. She said it is to make sure all dye is removed to prevent it from continuing to process.

You can wash your hair the day after but it is best to allow the cuticle of the hair to close up as much as it can naturally. I purposely color my hair on Friday so I can have the weekend so I don't need to be anywhere to wash it.

Coloring and perming completely blow open the cuticle the hair and coloring deposits color into the cortex. It does take a few days to close more naturally and if washed before that you have a greater chance of losing color. Of course lots of people wash right away and everyones hair is different and some people have hair where color loss is nil or minimal.

Darker colors or reds are more apt for color loss because their color molecules are larger.

I always use either Joico KPAK 24-36 hours before a treatment or ApHogee two step protein treatment before a treatment. These treatments fill in (with protein) any porous, damaged hair and even it out from root to tip and are bonded into the hair with heat. That way when you wash after a chemical process you get less damage and unevenness and damage causes color loss. I used these two products on all my color clients especially if they had uneven porosity.

This is very helpful. Thanks!

Yes it was helpful. Thank you jazzbabe. I did internet searches on the topic but never could find a good statement on this subject.

Re: Question for hair color professionals.

I am not a professional, but clearly TODAY I am a busybody. {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

I color my hair at home, and what I do, if I want to wash my hair the following day, is to use the conditioner that they give you in the package---the one that they tell you to use after rinsing the color out. No shampoo---just the conditioner. Works great!
