Question for hair color professionals.

Can you wash your hair the day after you color? Does waiting 48 hours really make any difference?

Re: Question for hair color professionals.

It depends on your natural oiliness. I wait two days and use dry shampoo just so my natural oils have time to do their thing.

Re: Question for hair color professionals.

You can wash your hair the day after but it is best to allow the cuticle of the hair to close up as much as it can naturally. I purposely color my hair on Friday so I can have the weekend so I don't need to be anywhere to wash it.

Coloring and perming completely blow open the cuticle the hair and coloring deposits color into the cortex. It does take a few days to close more naturally and if washed before that you have a greater chance of losing color. Of course lots of people wash right away and everyones hair is different and some people have hair where color loss is nil or minimal.

Darker colors or reds are more apt for color loss because their color molecules are larger.

I always use either Joico KPAK 24-36 hours before a treatment or ApHogee two step protein treatment before a treatment. These treatments fill in (with protein) any porous, damaged hair and even it out from root to tip and are bonded into the hair with heat. That way when you wash after a chemical process you get less damage and unevenness and damage causes color loss. I used these two products on all my color clients especially if they had uneven porosity.

Which Joico KPAK do you use? There seem to be several on Amazon.

Since my bottom half of my hair is darker I only dyed the top half so it will all match. I find Ion color sealer conditioner to be really good.

For a treatment I use Joico Kpak Reconstructing Treatment. This is not a conditioner and offers no moisturizing at all. It simply adds proteins 19 essential amino acids. I also like KPAK Liquid Reconstructor Balm. It is great to spray on after shampooing and conditioner. Works quickly in adding proteins and amino acids for the finest/damaged/porous hair.

After the color I use a good moisturizer, you can use any you like. I like a few different ones but most often use Joico Recovery Moisture Treatment Balm.

Like I said though, you can use any good moisturizer that you happen to love.

I too use that normally and skip the conditioner in the color kit. It works fine for my super fine, super thick but healthy hair. I dye every 8 weeks or so.

I have super fine, super thick, long pixie hair. It is normally very healthy because I don't use conditioners but do brush my natural oils out with a boar brush. Which Joico shampoo would be best for my red dyed hair without adding too much moisture? I find those moisturizing shampoos to add too much and weigh my hair down.
