I hope I can convey my question clearly because I'm suffering from a terrible head cold and have taken some over-the-counter stuff to help. It has made me a little woozy, but I can still function, I think, lol.

Anyway, I just returned from a trip and we flew to our destination.  While we were boarding the plane a woman held up the line boarding because she was disinfecting her seats.  Now I understand disinfecting some public areas, I'm a bit of a germ phobe myself and was ready with my own Clorox wipes for my seats.Smiley Very Happy  But I heard the other irritated passengers say, what is she doing?  No matter what you do you can never get rid of bacteria, germs, and the such off you.  It's all part of our microbiome(?).

My question is how many germs, bacteria, etc can you eliminate with wipes, Lysol, and so forth? And are we fighting a losing battle?

   Personally, I find that going a bit overboard (holding up the line) to sanitize her seat.

   I'm not answering your question here but I think at some point you're just fighting a losing battle.

I think it's wiser just to wash your hands, shower and change your traveling clothes when you reach your destination if you're concerned about germs..... or live in a bubble.

@Northray

Wipes and sprays are made to reduce the numbers of germs where the wipes/sprays are used. They don't sterilize and are formulated to disinfect only. Hand washing and/or using hand sanitizers will further prevent the spread of germs. It's not a losing battle. It's called infection control.

So there is a difference between sterilization and disinfecting?

IMO all that extra stuff is going overboard and ends up weakening our own built in immunities. Disinfecting and constantly using antibacterial wipes serve to create a resistance and hence stronger bacteria. Wash your hands with soap after using the restroom and other key times and go live your life without fear.

There are no household sterilizers on the market. Sterilizing products can be very hazardous, costly and need proper storage. Not a good idea to have them laying around the house. Bleach and alcohol are the strongest household disinfectants.

I agree, I think that's a bit overboard.  Wash your hands frequently and wear a mask if you are really worried.

We used to cruise out of Charleston.  Buses are used to transport folks to and from the ship.  I think that's a prime place for catching something as the buses are packed full, the windows are closed with the heat or AC on.  I wear a mask when in the bus, but not on the ship.
