Re: Question for Girls Who Have Curls

I love the reference to plopping! I have medium length curly hair, and diffusing works wonders, but for the best results, I let my hair air dry a bit but before diffusing. I used to live in Manhattan, where I had my hair cut at Ouidad’s salon as well as at Devashan, the salon where Lorraine Massey’s curly hair method was born. This was back in the 1990s, or yikes, possibly earlier; who can remember, lol.

I moved upstate years ago, but have lately learned new and better styling techniques (for my curls) by watching tutorials online at manesbymel. Mel is a modern curly hair guru, a legend and super entertaining. I’ve also learned a lot by watching tutorials by jaime jo, who lives in Australian. This old dog learned new tricks and my hair never looked better.
One more thing: there is no standard one-size approach to styling curly hair. Experiment and if someone says you have to follow only their particular hair rules, run. Back in the day, I was told that I should never ever use sulfates because this was a mortal sin, lol. But my scalp had massive allergic reactions to every all-natural plant based shampoo I tried. I’m allergic to everything and have celiac disease. I had to have cortisone injections in my scalp in a regular basis. My point? There is no one true hair religion!!! It’s YOUR hair and nobody else’s. Rock it in the free world!

Re: Question for Girls Who Have Curls

@Leeniebug I agree about not being tied to the "rules".  I tried that for awhile, but I am now allowing some silicones back in my life because I now know some of them will actually wash out with a co-wash.  I use a sulfate clarifying shampoo once a month before coloring mainly becuase of my hard water.  I use a shampoo specifically for hard water.  But all those things about standing with your head upside down in the shower putting product in dripping wet hair is a total no.  I have a tiny shower to begin with and I absolutley hate dripping hair.

I was in a group on Facebook that started out anything could be discussed.  Suddenly, almost overnight, one of the admins started jumping on anybody that mentioned a product that wasn't "water soluble".  Of course, the Admins are also the ones that determine what products are water soluble.   They weren't interested in my argument that most shampoos, and even cleansing conditioners, contain emulsifiers specifically to make non-water-soluble ingredients water-soluble.  Oh, and absolutely no oil in your hair.  Never mind that even the products sold by the owners of the groups have oils in them.  I moved on to the Curly Method Rejects group.

Love your comment, Icegoddess! I am a curly hair method reject as well. We should all free our hair from the “rules.” ❤️

@SeaMaiden

I plop, followed by air-drying or diffusing.  Diffusing really adds more body.  If you're not familiar with plopping, there are a lot of You Tube videos.

@x Hedge

That is the BEST curly girl advice I've read!  I do everything in your suggestions, but I had not heard of the "scrunch out the crunch", although I was doing it.  I didn't realize it had an actual name. LOL!

Re: Question for Girls Who Have Curls

@SeaMaiden   After shower take your towel and scrunch it on your head in different places to take out the water and you can create your own form of curls.  Diffuser or air dry.  You can also use a product for curls to enhance.  I only have a little curl but waves when my hair is a certain length.  It's strange.  Very short it is completely straight but if I let if grow out  somewhat longer here come the waves and curls.
