Question:  which primer is the best?

That's subjective and usually requires some personal testing to accommodate your skin type, how it plays with your other skincare and foundation, if you want shimmer, tint, etc.    There's no one size fits all.

My understganding is that primer is used  as a barrier, to keep makeup from soaking into your skin. If it makes you feel dry, for goodness' sake don't use it! Find another one, or skip it. Or, if you can skip the makeup, you won't need the primer!

@KaySD that's sorta the way Laura Gellar described it last night.  She said your skin is soaking in all our skincare and unless you want your skin to also soak in your foundation, you should wear a primer.

If you are oily and want a matte primer, you can use Monistat CHAFFING Gel.  I got this tip here probably 25 years ago.  It's an exact dupe for the Smashbox silicone primer.  I used it till my complexion transitioned from oily to dry.

I add my primer with my moisturizer and spf---have for years. I like Smashbox, LG Spackle, there are combo bb/cc creams with primer in it like BE Complexion Rescue which is a tinted gel cream with spf--I still add mositurizer to it tho. I LOVED Laura Mercier tinted bb cram but heard the formulation was changed.

I always use a primer...makes a world of difference in the application of your makeup.

I've tried a few primers in the past and none of them made any difference.  I would love to find one that works.

What makes all the difference for me in makeup is using a damp sponge for application.  I use Real Techniques and the result I get is an air brushed look.
