Putting On Eyeshadow Before Foundation??

How does this even work?  I know it must since I've seen so many YT vids doing it.  But how?  When I put on my foundation (after moisturizer and primer) it's blended all around my eyes and even on my eyelids sometimes.  How can you apply shadow and then apply and blend foundation around the eyes?  Seems like there would be a lot of going back and touching up the area.  I get the whole eyeshadow fall out thing.  There are ways to prevent that if it's a problem.

Moisturizer first, foundation and sponge over all of the eye area.  Then do your blush and then the eyes.  Eyeliner first, shadow, mascara.  Here comes the lipstick!  You are done.

I've done it, and it didn't work well for me.  It's better for me to apply my face makeup first and use a good setting spray.  Any fallout from eyeshadow then just whisks away with a fluffy brush.

Since I extend my shadow past my eye orbit that wouldn't work for me.

I have seen a small card held under the eye before applying eye makeup.

I agree with all of you VERY SMART ladies.  The eyeshadow first is a NO-GO for moi!

The reasoning behind it makes sense.  I have tried it ... once.   Doesn't work for me, either.

I work from top down. Do all the makeup around the eyes, then do the moisturizer and then the foundation. If I have any eye shadow fallout, I remove it before the moisturizer. So I don't need to do any touch up.

Just don't get that logic!!  Not possible for a good look!  Eye area needs moisturizer first then primer and light foundation all over before even doing eyes.  Eye makeup would not last long doing it first!  Plus if you get fallout from powder shadow and clean it up you are putting moisturizer and makeup over unclean skin.  No wonder many complain their eye makeup doesn't stay on and fades off!  Whatever works do it!!

Re: Putting On Eyeshadow Before Foundation??

In everyday makeup, doing foundation & concealer first works best. Professional makeup artists usually prefer to do eyes first.

Foundation and concealer should not be used on eyelids, only an eye primer. Primer is also applied directly under bottom lashes to keep liner from moving. Concealer on lids is oily and can crease. Another factor to consider is having foundation on the face means wiping it off the brows to get a matte, makeup free surface to apply color and see the true shade and if it's natural looking.

During application, many shadow shades are blended, mixed and taken off until the color seems right. Using eye makeup remover would disturb any other face makeup. Sometimes for photos, I'll do lips and brows first to give me balance on the face and a map to begin work. That done, often less shadow, blush or bronzer is needed.

Doing my own makeup, skincare/foundation and concealer comes first and then the eye makeup. If using more shadow than usual, I just place a Kleenex lightly under the eye to keep fallout from landing on corrector/concealer and foundation. It also gives those products time to settle into the skin.

After shadow is brows, liner and mascara. Then bronzer and blush, lips and gloss. Last step is setting spray.

I rarely do a full makeup on myself. I use tinted moisturizer, concealer for areas that need extra coverage, cream blush, brows, mascara and tinted lip balm. Less is more for me. I like a dewy, more youthful look without a lot of time involved. I can build on that basic look at any time.
