I also get perms in my snow white, thin hair.  It looks much like the picture posted and lasts long enough for me to get it cut 2 times before it needs redoing!

Wash, shape and let dry!

My neighbor asked if I had naturally curly hair!

I get a perm every three or four months. I have straight fine hair and I've tried many different products to give my hair body and the only thing that works for me is a perm. I always ask for a gentle perm. I color my hair with Natural Instincts hair color and I use an electric curling brush to get the look I want.

I used to get perms when I was a kid (thanks mom!) and had a couple as a young adult in the 1980s when they were popular.  I really don't like the way I look with curly hair....straight or wavy is the best for me.

I happen to have straight, fine but thick hair.  Most of the time when I style it (I wear an almost shoulder length bob) it looks good but if it's rainy or humid out my hair can get frizzy.

Last year when I went to Florida my hair looked so awful!!!  Between the humidity & wind I looked like a different person and not in a good way. I complained to my stylist and she suggested a keratin.  I realize it's not for everyone but I couldn't believe how great my hair looked after having it done in September and how well it behaved!  It lasts for 3-4 months.

I'm going to visit my mom in Florida again soon and just had another Keratin treatment.  Hair looks great and the real test will be the muggy Fl weather!

I know the salon products they use today to color and perm the hair is much better than years ago. That being said, I think it's asking alot of ones hair to withstand 2 chemical hair processes. To me a soft perm means a perm using a larger rod, not the chemical makeup of the perm itself. A good, honest hairdresser should be able to advise what is best for your hair without doing too much damage. Good luck.

@Icegoddess- Your perm is lovely  - including your color!  I've always been envious of ladies with curls - whether natural or permed.

Thx for posting a pic.

@San Antonio Gal, thanks.  I do believe this is the first time I have actually liked my perm on the first day.  It usually takes a couple of weeks for it to calm down.  I'll probably have to color the roots next weekend.  I had to spray on a little root touch-up this morning.  I'm really drawn to curls, but especially curly hair that'll never be mine.  I've also turned more than one of my friends red.

I get a spiral perm once a year and i have fine waist length hair with no layers and i get the top foiled 3 times a year, My hair is in pretty good shape for my age. The perms and colors are so much better then they were years ago.

@Summer Shine, I don't understand why you use a flat iron if you want some body and/or curls. I use one on a section of my hair that is frizzy, but never on the rest of my hair. I agree with others that a shorter cut with layers makes it easier to get some body and style, along with a mousse or gel. I bought a Calista "perfector" to curl my hair on the days I don't wash it, and that works well for me. I haven't had a perm for years, but that might work for you. Whatever you decide, I'd stop using the flat iron because you'll just get more flat, straight hair from it! Good luck to you!

I have a short layered Bob, use a round brush with drying and flat iron to shape the Bob. I can curl my hair with it as well, it just never holds. I don’t want curls so much a beachy waves. I have an arsenal of hair styling gadgets, Instyler, Valoom(sp?), several sizes of curling irons, tried and returned the beachwaver tsv, and the Daphne. 🙀 Yikes, I need an intervention.

I would get a perm in a NY minute if I could find a trusted experieced stylist. I can't even get a good hair cut so I can imagine letting a fried perm grow out.
