@World Traveler wrote:@JeanLouiseFinch @Pecky It has always been my understanding from listening to various beauty vendors over the years that you put the thinnest product (usually serums) on your face first, then layer on top of each one until the thickest item, which is usually the moisturizer. That certainly was the way Perricone always said to do it when I was using his products exclusively; but like I said, I have heard it from other vendors too.
So to read that you do it differently (retin not first), but obviously have great results or you wouldn't continue to do it that way, is surprising.
I may keep doing it thinnest to thickest for a month or two, and then switch it to the way you both do it, just to see if I notice a difference. And I suppose the usual "everyone's skin is different" falls into play here too.
@World Traveler - I've always heard the "thinnest to thickest" rule also and thats what I do. Like @JeanLouiseFinch I do my evening skincare usually before 8:00pm. Never considered doing all of it except for the PTR retinol and then putting the retinol on before bed. Not sure I'd remember to do it to be honest or I could see myself saying "never mind, I'm too tired" and then not doing it at all. LOL

@World Traveler & @Pecky -
I do do thinnest to thickest with my essences, serums, oil. and moisturizer. I've also heard that oil seals everything in. That's what confuses me. Moisturizer is thicker but if oil seals then shouldn't their order be switched? Like I said earlier, just get it on.
Many years ago, I read the routine of a certain dermatologist. Her name started with a "B", but that's all I can recall. Anyway, in the article it was stated that she did her PM routine of cleansing, toning, serums, moisturizer (don't remember if oil was mentioned) and then she waited to apply her Retin A/Tretinoin until bedtime. She said she kept her tube on the nightstand. That's where I took my cue from.

I have always heard to put oils on last.

@JeanLouiseFinch - Ok then my question is, if one follows the thinnest to thickest rule, and puts on an oil after the moisturizer and it "seals" in the skin care, how do you know the retinol/Retin A/Tretinoin makes it through the oil/moisturizer? That's always been my concern. Seems to me that the retinol would not penetrate after the oil is put on. Ugh, so confusing.

Oh, yeah, that too, @JudyL . I think that's what the waiting period is for - to allow everything to penetrate first and normalize before going in with the Retin A/Tretinoin. 🤷♀️. If I were using retinol, I'd probably put it on earlier in the routine, finish with the moisturizer and be done. No waiting.

I always put on eye cream first before I do rest of face.

The Cosmopolitan article "What is the Correct Skincare Routine Order in 2025" was written by Beth Gillette and Chloe Metger. These are excerpts from that article.
