I was wondering if anyone knew the names of some PH balanced soaps as well as lotions etc. I went to the Derm and he said my skin's PH is off and is causing problems. The lotions he prescribed have petrolateum (sp) in them and I don't think that ingredient is helpful to the skin.

Thanks for any information you can pass along

No true soap is going to be pH balanced as soap is alkaline due to the ingredients. Most soap free cleansers on the market today are pH balanced regardless of whether or not they are labeled that way. You can buy litmus strips to test the pH of products. When you say the pH of your skin is off, do you mean it's too acidic or too alkaline? PHisoderm has cleansers to adjust the pH of your skin.

You are right, petrolatum is a chemical and not good for skin. There is a lot of research on PH Balance, but I think if you steer clear of products with parabens, sulfates, petrolatum, and phthalates, your skin will get happy again. Try JASON, Giovanni, Burts Bees, just to name a few. Check your local health store, Trader Joe's or in the organic section of Whole Foods or Wegmans.

My dermatologist told me that goat milk soap and lotion is as close as you can get to your body's normal pH.

the most reliable for me have been the olivella line (they make an olive oil soap which is great) and Seba Med, which is a non soap pH balanced cleanser. Also, L'Occitane makes a nice Shea Butter soap. Those are about the only three things I can use without itching. You can get olivella at the Ross and Marshall stores or online at Drugstore.com. Very inexpensive.

You can find facial cleansers that are well-balanced. Not sure about bar soaps.

I disagree that petrolatum (petroleum jelly, Vaseline) is necessarily bad for you. Yes, it's a chemical, but that doesn't make it bad. We couldn't exist without chemicals. And the fact is that, no, it is not just something someone scraped out of an oil drum. That is the line that some skincare companies use to scare you into using their products. All the reputable sources I've read say that it's non-comedogenic and perfectly okay for the skin.

Walgreen's has a line called Shea Moisture. Their baby products are great for your skin and are super gentle at cleaning and moisturizing. Try them. They are moderately priced and they have soap, baby wash (doubles as a great face wash), and raw shea butter (thick but great).

Love the SheaMoisture hair products and have recently bought their body washes. I think this company really give you your money's worth.

They are also available at BBB, CVS, and online at drugstore.com and probably other sites as well.

My granddaughter has super sensitive skin. Her parents had to get a rx skin cream for after her bath. I have been getting goats milk soap from Goat Milk Stuff (a family operation) and I tried their Purity bar on her one night. Most of the nasty bumps on her back were gone the next morning. I use the purity on my face and my skin looks and feels great. They make super nice soaps and they deliver fast.
