I have put different types of oil on my lips before bed also, as they are so dry.

Same problem waking up with really dry lips.  I've found Aquaphor works best for me.

I use L'Occitane shea butter hand cream on my hands at night with cotton gloves. Before I put the gloves on, I rub my finger across my lips. It works like a charm! My lips are soft when I wake up in the morning. It even works better than L'Occitane's lip balm.

Aquaphor is the bomb!  Many derms recommend it or even plain petroleum jelly for lips, elbows, dry areas, etc.

Oil on the lips doesn't hydrate them. Oils only coat the lips to prevent moisture loss but if your lips are already dry then an oil won't help. You need to hydrate your lips first with a balm which contains humectants and other hydrating ingredients such as glycerin, lanolin, hyaluronic acid and ceramides. Apply your oil on top of that to seal in the moisture and prevent it's loss.

Yes, i normally use balms, but thought since our lips do not produce oil in them i would try putting one on.

I apply Burt's Bees and then top that with a layer of Aquaphor Healing Balm Stick before I hit the hay. I never have chapped or dry lips.

Re: Oil on lips question

For night time one needs more than a light oil.  I apply something all day long on an off like Aquaphor or Cocoa Butter Lip Balm.

Night time I have had success with Laneige  Lip Sleeping Mask. Occasionally I think it helps to use a lip scrub so lip products can work better and absorb.

I'm a big fan of shea butter or Beackman's lip balm.

Every time I have tried a plain, pure oil, I think everything actually gets drier.  I have sworn off.

I am a fan of Vaseline or CeraVe healing.
