OUTER V On small deep set eyes??

I know the outer v is a great way to create lift to your eye with shadows...but I can't seem to get this right. Is this best for those with larger lids....more space between eye and brow?? I can't seem to figure out how high up it should go?? Every time I try I feel like I look really, really madeup...clownish! Any suggestions?? Thanks!
