After cleaning today, shall I say dusting, the rags are coming up black, not dirty but black. I am a huge candle burner, and never thought I would have to deal with this.

I really cannot stand flameless candles, because they're not the real thing, but I know they are so popular.

How do you handle candle soot build-up? I have bought so many candles and use them year round, citrus scents in summer, etc.

I don't want to stop but this black soot on the rug, on my socks, is getting to be ridiculous. I was even going to get the carpets cleaned, to get rid of the soot buildup, but will it all get removed?

Curious on your answers.

Re: OT Candles soot...........

Try soy candles. They are supposed to burn clean, and are not bad for you to breathe in. I think they will not leave the black soot that regular candles leave. They are much better for you. Regular candles basically pollute the air.

Re: OT Candles soot...........

You might want to check out YankeeCandle.com for this kind of info.

For example, keeping the wick trimmed, etc.

There are also candle toppers to help them burn better.

Enjoy!

Re: OT Candles soot...........

I wasn't a big candle burner, but YC made so much soot I began to see it on my ceiling. I stopped using them. I do like flameless candles especially Luminara & CI. For a nice scent, I use an electric jar warmer or tarte burner. I will now only burn small candles on top of stove (under my microwave so it is contained) so it doesn't create soot on walls or ceiling. You would be surprised how dirty some candles burn & I did keep the wicks trimmed.

I had a big problem with sooty walls when I was burning Yankee Jar Candles on a regular basis. As much as I like several of the scents, it's not worth the aggravation so I quit buying them. Now I either burn the BBW candles or use a home fragrance oil and don't have the problem anymore.

Re: OT Candles soot...........

At dusk, I light candles almost every night we're home. I only use PartyLite candles and I know they're expensive, but I get them on ebay sometimes. I have hundreds of these candles, mostly pillars and votives. Tea lights are a waste to me and I'm not in to those melting things. Anyhow, no soot whatsoever. Ever. They are pretty colors and scents and burn clean.

Yankee candles and those other *boutique* candles smell good in the jar, but once they start burning they make my throat scratchy and look at the black soot inside the jar. Yuck.

People know I am a candle addict (my first thread here was about PartyLite) and lots of times people give me candles as gifts. If it's a not a PartyLite, I burn it outside.

Imagine what you are breathing, that soot was in your air first before it settled. I used to burn candles regularly but finally my lungs and eyes couldn't take it. Now I occasionally burn beeswax candles but most of the time I use flameless.

I no longer actually light and burn my candles; I use candle warmers in nearly every room to scent my house.

Keep the wicks trimmed low and you won't get soot. For instance if you are burning the candle for several hours and the wax burns down, blow out the candle, trim the wick again and relight the candle (pour out some of the wax if need be).

Re: OT Candles soot...........

Yankee candles are the ones I've switched to in the last recent months! This is unbelievable. Thank you for bringing that to light - no pun intended !

I've gotten Partylite on Ebay, too, and now I'll continue to do so. Wow. It has to be the Yankee brand.
