It depends on the seller. Many of them run stores.

You will be charged tax if the seller is in your state .... or the seller isn't an individual, but a retailer that is set up to charge tax everywhere (like QVC).

If you can't tell, send them a quick note and ask if they charge tax in your state. {#emotions_dlg.thumbup1}

I have run into this issue lately, too!

The tax made the item more expensive than from a seller in a different state- so I had to wait a couple more days for the item to arrive but I got to pay $x-amount less so it was worth it to me.

If you look at the Shipping and Payments tab on the item listing, you can see whether or not the seller will charge sales tax. CA sellers most often apply sales tax to anything I buy. Like PurpleCow, I rarely buy from sellers in CA who will charge me tax if I can get the same item from another state.

Re: O/T WHEN DID EBAY START CHARGING TAX

Up until a couple of years ago, Amazon didn't chargé tax.MIT was a major disappointment when they did. Occasionally there will be items where tax is not charged, sometimes when it is only fulfilled by Amazon and the seller is in another state, but for the most part all sales charge tax. It is a HUGE loss for buyers in states like CA where tax is so high. I hadn't been charged on EBay on my last few purchases. It really should only be for sellers in your own state and if the seller is reporting and paying taxes to their state. Both of these were the result of intense lobbying by retailers who were losing buyers so Amazon and EBay. Then of course states started lobbying as well. Even though my Gucci bag was sold and shipped bynSan Antonio Saks and I am in CA Saks has stores in CA. Amazon fought this for,a very long time, but ultimately lost

What everyone else said. Also it usually says in the listing. I'm on ebay a lot and I've been seeing ""buyers from X state will pay X% sales tax"" for quite a few years. I mostly Buy clothing and we don't have tax on clothes here so I haven't run across it for myself.

The sales tax you pay on Ebay and Amazon are reported and paid to your state. States are losing revenues for infrastructure, schools, etc, because the online companies aren't charging sales tax and paying it to the states and people order on line so they aren't charged tax. The law is if you aren't charged tax on an online purchase, you have to report your purchases on your personal state income tax form and pay the tax on your purchases at the end of the year.

To say nothing of the fact that it created an unfair advantage over brick-and-mortars.
