O/T: Need Las Vegas advice please

My first time to LV next week...staying at The Venetian...need advice about what to see beyond gambling...for instance, do I purchase tickets to Cirque du Soleil in LV or before?

Things to see within the see that I shouldn't miss?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated...a little nervous about visiting without advice.
