Re: O/T: HSN Emergency Meals Kit TS

Too many carbs, and no protein. {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown} $$$$ REI has better options IMHO, for less!

I see these meals at BJ's and Costco. What kind of emergency, realistically, or situation would someone need to use these?

Has anyone been in a situation where they had a need for emergency food? Even camping?

It doesn't take much thought to come up with several scenarios where you might need emergency food. Hurricanes, power outages, winter storms that strand someone inside. Hurricane Sandy knocked our power out for 5 straight days and I can tell you that I would've liked more variety in what I ate than what I had on hand at the time. This kit would've provided that.

Also, our nation's power grid is so fragile - as most of us east coasters experienced a few years back when we all went dark. Then what? You can't simply get in your car & drive to another city's grocery store when your whole state is out of power. And many feel that the terrorists are eyeing our outdated power grid for the next attack. If that happens, we're in big trouble.

And these days, with all the protests and looting of stores - if your neighborhood suddenly becomes too unsafe to venture out in, at least you'd have a supply of food on hand. I mean anything can happen these days, we see it on the news every day. One's situation can change in a minute.

CW, thanks for the breakdown. I haven't had those experiences. The longest we've been without power was 4 hours. I was more annoyed that my Keurig didn't work.

The meat part (or lack thereof) is cracking me up. Retailers must think we're stupid. SMH.

Prepping has become a huge business. HSN just wants to cash in.

No. I caught a glimpse of some of the foods & I don't eat a lot of them because of food sensitivities. In an emergency I would not want to eat foods that are not healthy for me.

Up here it's not unusual to be without power for 3-4 days. Even in the dead of winter. Storms roll off Lake Michigan in the summer that can kick up very serious thunderstorms. Many people here have a whole house generator. It's a prized possession here, like saying you own a Cadillac. {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

We had storms roll thru a couple of years ago when I lived in Detroit. We were without power for 3 days in the city. People who live in hurricane prone areas have emergency provisions. They know the grocery store shelves will empty quickly.

Backpackers don't have a camping emergency, they've carried freeze dried foods for ages. Quick, convenient and little mess without the weight of heavy cans.

We were without power for 2 weeks when a massive ice storm moved into the state several years ago in February. The ice on the lines, etc. disrupted power on a massive scale and it took time for the power companies to repair lines, etc. Gas heat controlled by an electric thermostat was non-existant. It was a real fun time. Until that time, most people didn't see a need for a generator. I still don't have one but I keep shelf stable food on hand.

I was concerned with the fact that the servings were too big for only the two of us. I actually appreciate that there's no real meat in it but my husband sure won't.

Use your brain for like 30 seconds. Buy some Ramen noodles & some canned beef & chicken. Save yourself 75.00. Jeez.
